Latimer and Brownlow.
There is the liveliest sort of
rivalry among several statesmen,
Bays the Washington Post, to be
known as the father of the good
roads movement in Congress.
Undisputed possession of the
title would mean thousands ol
votes and uninterrupted tenure
lor some men, just as the distinc
tion of fathering the irrigation
law has been a high feather in
the cap of more than one Western
Congressman.
Senator Latimer of South Carolina
has been seeking to ''get in
on the ground floor" of the move
merit. It makes no difference
that Federal legislation for good
roads, accompanied with a fat |
appropriation, is years oil*. The 1
thing is immensely popular in i
South Carolina. Ilis friends in
the Palmetto State are already
christening him the Daddy ol
Good Roads.
But if Mr. Latimer should '
claim that title in some places,
outside of his own State, there ,
would he blood on the moon. 1
Over in the House there is a
Tennesseean of stock build and
powerful muscles, Mr. \V. l\
Brownlow, who claims the good
roads movement as his child. Mr !
Brownlow has been willing ;?i '
long time to fight and die lor !
good roads. In more tiian one '
campaign throughout the mount n
ains of his region, Mr. Brownlow's '
powerful voice has been heard in :
behalf of the cause, lie does not |<
propose to surrender his laurels.

Seaboard's Fast Time.
The annual tourist special
from New York to St. Augustine.
Fla., over the Seaboard Air Line,
passed through here Tuesday
night at 11 o'clock, says the
Italeigh Times. It carried 10.5
wealthy people from New York
and was a personally conducted I
train. The train consisted of six ,
handsome Pullmans. The trip),
from New York to St Augustine!!
was made in about 25 hours. t
