A Second Noah's Ark.
An old lady recently bargained
with a London cabman stand
ing outside a railway station to

president that the office of rail
road commissioner, held by the
late (Jen. James Longstreet, be
abolished.
It seems probable now that
that recommendation will be
adopted and that no successor to
Gen. Longstreet will be appoint
ed. For two years the interior
department has made no estimate
for the salary of railroad commissioner,
the necessary appropriation
lor (Jen. Longstreet's
salary of $5,000 being nuide by
congress on its own initiative.
The duties of the ofliee practical*

commerce commission.
