"It is going to rain within nix
hours," said the man, with pro9
voking deliberation. The sun
was shining brightly, and only a
few lloating clouds broke the
clear blue of the broad sky.
"Rain !" said the other, deri
sively. "And out of that sky?
You're a pessimist. You always
carry an umbrella."
"I'll bet you a good dinner that
it will rain within six hours," the

The bet was made, and the bet

doubted. It rained in leas than

The skin was dripping wet, and
sweat, so to speak,stood out upon
its scaly back in huge drops,
which would swell and swell and
silently run together into little
streamletf, which in turn would
rush down in an avalanche of
? other drops and reach the lloor
with a splash liko n great tear.
Everything else in the room was
^ as dry as the humid atmosphere
of a city after a thunderstorm
would allow.
"That's my barometer," said
the prophet. "1 killed the snake
myself in Florida and had it
stripped. The skin is not fanned
hut just preserved, liko rawhide.
I had noticed in some of *the
coasting noats along the gulf
shorn little strips of snakeskin
hung up in the cabin. The captains
had told me they could always
toll when a squall was com
ing by watching this skin. I have
had that for three yearn now, and
it has beep far more accurate
than the weather observer. No I
mutter when the first indications'
of a storm make themselves felt
in the atmosphere, whether it be :
night or day, summer or wiut?j,
the faithful skin shows it by b

it is more like sandpaper than!
anything else. In the winter of
course the sweat is not so profn ?

summer.

ANOTHER LIEUTENANT GENERAL
18 DEAD.
General Lonestreet I'uhsps Away
at Age of Eighty-Four.
Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 2.?Gen.
Longstreet, soldier,statesman and
diplomat and the last lieutenant
general of the Confederate army
with the exception of Gen. Gor
don, died at G.iinsville, Ga., this
afternoon at 6 o'clock from an
attack of acute pneumonia He
had been ill two days.
Gen. Longstreet was a sufferer
lroin cancer of the eye, but his
general health had been good until
Wednesday, when he was
seized with ? midden <t"
veloping later into pneumonia ol
violent nature. lie was 84 years
old. He is survived by his wife,
four sons and a daughter. He
will he buried in Qainsville,
which has been his home since
the Civil war.
Gen. James Longstreet was
born in Edgefield district, S. O.,
Ian. 8, 1321. lie was appointed
to the military academy from
Alabama, where he graduated in
1842 He won his spurs in the
Mexican war, where he particpated
in eight important battles
and was brevet ted captain and
major for gallant conduct.
When the Civil war began he
enlisted on the Confederate side
and was immediately made bri
gadier general. lie had an important
part in many of the hatties
of the War and was known
as one of the hardest fighters in
the service. He was in the surrender
at Appomattox.

established a commercial house
of which he was the head. lie
was appointed surveyor of the
port of New Orleans by President
Grant, and was afterwards super
visor of internal revenue in New
Orleans and postmaster in that
city. IIo was sent as United
States minister to Turkey by
President Hayes and under President
Garfield was United State
marshal lor the district of Georgia.
Some years ago he was appointed
United States comiuis
sinner of railroads with headquarters
at Washington, which position
he held till the time of his
death.
