periments with cotton at this
place for two seasons paBt. His
idea is to test, first, whether
Egyptian cotton can he grown
successfully in this country, and
secondly, to produce a prolific,
long staple, smooth-seeded cotton
for general upland planting.
It was demonstrated beyond
doubt that Egyptian cotton can
be produced successfully in this (
country, so far as getting the <
quality is concerned. A dozen or
more samples grown in this State
along with the same number of
specimens of real Egyptian cotton
were submitted to cotton mill
men throughout the country and
onlv one examiner was able to
differentiate between them.
When it is remomberod that over
$1,000,000 worth of Egvotian cot
ton is annuuily imported for mills ;
in this country, it is easy to unierstand
the importance that '
this matter would assume were
the crop readily produced here. 1
It is yet to be proven, however, 1
that it can be frown in such
quantity as to compete, acre for
acre, with upland cotton, though
it seems entirely probable.
To produce a prolificlong staple ,
imooth-seeded cotton for upland j
planting Dr. Webber has grown a ]
hybrid between the Egyptian and i
the sea island cottons. The hy- I
L>rid is more prolific than either '
parent and so far has shown pretty
constant Egyptian characteristic.
The fibre of this hybrid J
averages 112 inches as against ,
1J average inches for Egyptian, ,
1 3 4 average inches for sea is- |
land and 1 averago for upland
3otton. The yield from the crop I
if the hybrid, this year is esti- i
mated at about 1,200 pounds seed 1
jotton per acre. The yield of lint
