CHARLIE ABERNATHY'S I
DEATH.

Special to The State.
Rock Hill, Nov. 28.?The death
of young Charlie Abernalhy, from
accident, or suicidal intent, ae reported
ir The State yesterday,
was received here Thursday with
regret, for the young people were
well known in this city. The
story is a sad one:
A number of young people had
been guests at a party given at
the home ot Mr. .1. M. Hough,
near Landsford, and dispersed a
while before midnight. Among
those who werd present and en
j >yed the evening were young
Charley Abernathy and Miss
Irene Thomasson, daughter ol
Mr. Harper Thomasson ot Fort
Lawn. Leaving the reception in
a buggy, these young friends proceeded
on the way to the young
lady's home, but tor some unexplained
reason, when they had
gone some distance, young Abernathy
told the young lady in a
threatening way that he intended
to kill himsell. She answered
"What with, soothing syrup?"
and at this lie pulled a pistol,
showed her "what with" and
pointing it at the side of his head
a flash and report startled the
young woman, and the form ot
Abernathy tumbled out ot the
buggy, a hind wheel stopping on
his body Realizing the awlul
truth, Miss Thomasson screamed
and jumped out ot the other side
ot the vehicle, almost frantic with
excitement.
In a buggy immediately in
front were riding a sister of Abernathy
in company with a young
man named lioddey They hurried
back to the scene and found
that death was already last coming
to the wounded man. Others
came, when Misses llough and
Abernathy were taken to their
homes and young Roddey, with

dead body in the buggy and conveyed
it to Fort Lawn. Yesterday
the remains were interred at
Neely's Creek church.
Mis ft Thom pson is firm in tin
beliei tiiat the awlul nflair was an
accident?that lie drew the pistol,
as he had thoughtlessly done before,
meaning to Irtghten tier, and
as the buggy at tlie time was
passing over rattier rough ground
siu* tuels confident (tie pulling oi
t fie trigger was without design 01
intent. The community generally
seems to he ol the same opinion.
However, t here is anot her story
to the effect that young Aberna
thv had a in l -ill nderst a ml i mr a-11 h
a young lady to whom he h id
been paying a great deal ot at
tention ; -.he li id reiused to "make
up" and he, lor (hit reason, killed
himself.
1 he deceased was the younge-t
son ot tlie late W. F. Abernathv
