Horrible, It True.
Richmond, Va., Nor. 18.?According
to a well known unwrit
ten law of the Kentucky mountaineers
to take llan eye for an
eye," or "a tooth for a tooth,"
the people of Stone Gap believe
Wentz has been cremated in a
coke oven.
The story from Big Stone Gap
is this:
During the summer a Kentucky
mountaineer got into adif
Acuity at Stone Gap, where the
?
?Tcin? interest b nave two miles
of coke ovens. Police Officer
King was shot by him and died
almost instantly.
The mountaineer being; badly
wounded he was removed to the
Wentz hospital. lie remained
in the hospital for some days and
disappeared.
Friends of the missing man
came to learn how ho was getting
along. When told he was gone
they asked for his body. Of
course it could not be given them.
They asked why and received no
satisfactory auswer to them. Then
they .jumped to the conclusion
entirely absurd that the people
in charge of the hospital had put
their friend in a coke oven.
The story is told, they are
thought by manv to have found
young Wenfz in a lonely spot in I
the mountains of Wise county
and did to him, according to their
custom, what they believed had
been done to their friend who
had been in the Wentz hospital.
