^ Our Washington correspondent
?ays that the idea has just begun
to percolate through the hair ol
thfb republicans that there is goin^
to be an investigation by
congress of the nastinesp in the
p<?toffioe department, or at least
it will be up to them to Refuse to
have one. The democrats are
determined to press the matter
ao|i the responsible party for the
repeal will be the republicans.
If they refuse all will know the
reason why. If they do not,
men mere will be an attempt to
N whitewash somebody and nouie'thing,
but the democratic mem
bets of the committee will come
ou| with Borne powerful good
campaign material. The repubIimii

WATCH RUSSIA AND JAPAN
III the light of the following
apMftal from London under date
of October 5, it looks like war
be^veeu Russia and Japan. The
special says: Russia and Japan
aro rapidly approaching a crisis
in their relations in the far east, ^
according to the latest advices
received here today. There is
every indication that Russia does
not intend to keep her agreement Tl
to evacuate Manchuria on Octo- ha
ber 8th. She is pouring troops jU
into Manchuria and rapidly con
structing fortifications at Port
Arthur. Japan, seeing the inev
itable result, is also preparing by
massing troops in Korea.
NOT IN DEMAND.
Monroe Enquirer.
It looks as if about the only
job open to a man who drinks
1 quor is holding down a goods
box and cussing the government
or packing brick. Nobody wants
to employ a drunkard. The following
from the Charlotte News
shows that the Southern road is
looking for sober men to work on
its lines :
During the course of an investigation
as to the cause of some
trouble on one of the branch
lines some days ago. it developed
that two of the men were under
the influence of whiskey the day
before the accident occurred.
The above incident is said to
have taken place on one of the
branch lines under Superintendent
Uamseurs supervision and
it is now given out that Supt
Kamseur has issued an order
stating that he will discharge any
employe of t he road found inside
a saloon drinking, whether on or
otr duty.
