Columbia, Aug. 20.?Just six
miles Irom here, near Bookter's
trestle, while oiling Hie valves on
passenger engine No. 1.004, of
the Southern Railway, Mr. John
R. Duncan, son of Col. I). 1*.
Duncan, secretary of the railroad
commission, los* his tooting and
was instantly hurled under the
engine and his body was run over
by thirteen passenger coaches.

As the train was nearing
Hookter's trestle the speed of the
H train was slacked to six miles an
hour and Duncan went out on
the left ot (he engine to oil the
valves on Ins side of the engine.
^ This is not an unusual tiling for a
fireman to do, Duncan having
oiled the engine atSkylnnd when
the train was going at a speed of
thirty five miles an hour. After
a short while Engineer Hunter
thought that ins tireman was tak
ing an usually long time and asked
Engineer Will Green, who was
on the engine with him, if he saw
Duncan on the other side. When
it was found that the young lireman
was missing the engine was
stopped and three hundred yards

was seen lying across the track.
The entire train had passed over
him and death was instantaneous,
the top of his skull being crushed
and both f??ef badly mangled.
Young liuncan had heen working
on the railroad about (luce
years and his ambition was to become
an engineer. In addition
to liking t be practical experience
y of runing on the engine he had
been working hard lor months
with a correspondence course,
