Some Affidavits Tillman's Lawyers Have Secured. Special to The State. Newberry, Feb. 12.?On a notion made by Solicitor Thurnond, on the part of the prosesution, the hearing on the appli :ation for bail of James H. Tillnan, charged with murder, was postponed until Thursday next, vhen it will be held in the supreme court room in Columbia. The motion was sustained on the {round that couusel for defense jud not submitted to Stule'6 counsel the affidavits presented oday, and State's counsel thereore had had no opportunity for eply. Following are the affilavits in substance, as they were mbmitted today. Mr. Nelson for the defense also presented the testimony taken at he inquest over the body of N. J. Gonzales. holtzenbacii's affidavit. Before me personally appeared tichard lioltzenback, who being luly sworn, says: "I came to he city of Columbia on the 12th lay of Jauuarv. 1903. for the purpose of trying to get a posiion as doorkeeper for the house >1 representatives but was uu ible to get the appointment and returned to my home on the 17th iay of January, and while I was ,11 the State house a day or two aefore the unfortunate occurence, I was talking to Capt. J. A. White, who was the keeper of ine of the committee rooms While he was there N. G. Gonzales came in and asked White vhere his 'boss' was, and Capt. White replied, 4I have no boss.' Tillman, he cut across he pavement and thrust his vhole right hand in his overcoat >ocket. 1 expected from what I leard him say in the State house hat he intended to shoot Gov. Mlman. White, keeper of one of the committee rooms, in fthich White said that he recalled the events mentioned in Holtzenbach's affidavit and substantiating it in every particular, except that not N. G. Gonzalea, he did not say it was Mr. Gonzales. tillman's affidavit. "Before me personally appear ed Jas. H. That he bore all q this with patience although bis private life, heretofore considered sacred was invaded, discussed and n held up to public derision. That deponent has been informed that ' during the campaign there was a R rumor that Gonzales had said it g Tillman had said the same things in Columbia that he had said ^ elsewhere there would be a per- tj sonal encounter in which one A would die. Deponent, was re- ^ peated urged and warned to look out for his safety while in Oolumbia, by various parties. De- rj ponent was informed that Gonzales came to the Slate house and ^ inquired for deponent and said that he had made deponout show ^ the white feather on several oc- t| casions and intended to make j him do it again. That he was desirious of avoiding a difficulty with Mr. Gonzales if he could.
