Washington, January 1(1.?At
Ilie Cabinet meeting today Postmaster
General Payne took up
with the President some cases relating
to the appointment of post
masters, but no announcements
of probable appointments were
made. It is understood that it
will be determined early next
week whether Samuel II. Vick,
the colored postmaster oi Wilson,
N. C.,wil! be appointed. The case
has attracted wide attention. No
new developments were reported
in the Indianola postoffioe cases,
except that it has been decided
to decline the request of the citizens
nf Indianola that heir mail
be sent to Ileathman instead ot
Greenville, on account of the
limited facilities of the Ileathman
office.

?Through the alleged interfe
ence of a mo-seiiger boy a wiec
was caused on the Baltimore an
Oiiio Railroad, east, ol Cum be
land, this morning, in which loi
employees of the Raliimoio an
<)hio Railroad were killed an
three injured Three ol the me
killed lived in Baltimore and tli
fourth was a resident of Cnmbo
laud.
The wreck wn? due to the dii
pla^ iug of a false signal, givit g a
f clear track for fast, bound passen?
g?r train No 10, when in tlie next
' block ahead there was standing
on the track a caboose and two
\ engines. The passenger train was
drawn by two engines and these
crabbed through the caboose and
| engine* which obstructed the
track. Luckily the train had not
attuined its full speed and was
only moving at the rate of about
twenty miles an hour when the col
lision came. The postal car ol
the passenger train was derailed,
but the passenger coaches did not
leave the track and their occu
pants escaped injury.
It is charged that a messenger
boy named Turner, who was 111
the block tower when No 10
came along, hearing the engineer's
whistle for clear tracks, pulled a
lever, giving him a clear signal.
The operator had, it is explained
previously set the signal at dan
ger. While his attcn'iou was being
devoted to communicating
- with the succeeding bio t; -ation
the boy, it is alleged, pu?m<l the
* lever that gave the oncoming
train the signal that it-had n clear
block ahead, and the tower ope'
r?tor was not aware of what was
11 done until the crash came.
