President Roosevelt announced today thai it is his purpose to appoint but one Democrat, upon the isthmian canal commission. This announcement was made to the members of the Texas dele gation, who called at the White House to urare tho annointment of Governor Sayers. The president suid he would be glad to consider Governor Sayers in connection with this appointment, as he considered the Texas governor an excellent man for the place, but lie could not say anything more than that he would be one of at least live men seriously con sidered. The other four are Senator Harris of Kansks.Senator Jenes of Arkansas, former Congressman Joe Washington of Nashville, and Henry G Heyster, a prominent citizen of New Orleans. The president says it is his present purpose to select one commissioner from the Gulf States and one from the Pacific slope. The Texans regard his announcement of a member from the Guif States as being favorable to Governor Sayers. There is a strong feeling here that the place may be tendered to Senator Morgan of Alkh*m?
