millB sustained a heavy Iobp
by lire this morning between 3
and,4 o'clock. The Are originated
in the dye room on the first lloor
of the new building, yovt recently
completed. It was caused by
spontaneous combustion from
the cottna drying niaoiune. Cotton
on the hot steam pipes ignited 1
and in a twinkle the room was in
a blaze. The niehfc watchman i
was on his rounds m another
part of the mill, and one of the
foremen hnd just left fhe drying 1
machine a moment before the
fire alarm. This new building 1

came to this city last Wed
nesduy from North Carolina, in
search of the infant that was left
on the platform of the Southern
railway recently. IIis wife is a
sister of the child's mother, who
is now at his home. The parties
all live in the same neighborhood.
The parents went to Columbia,
where the child was born
They came from there to Chester.
The mother told the whole story
alter she went home. She said
the man forced her to leave the
child and threatened to kill her
if she ever divulged the matter.
The brother in law savs the law
will be pressed against the seducer
ot the girl as far as possible.
lie will bo prosecuted for
breach of marriage contract and
Dti oilier charges and will then
be turned over to the South
Carolina authorities to punish
for abandoning the child. The
young man is wealthy and lin*
nlways had a good reputation.
The girl, who is about 19, is of
good family, and has always
stood high in the esteem of her
neighbors. When the city ?u
fhorities took charge ot this baby
tlioy had two applications tor it,
one from Clinton and the other
from Mrs. J. S. Street ot this
county.
It was given to Mrs. Street and
she very reluctantly parted with
it when approached by the gentleman
1'roin North Carolina, lie,
however, promptly paid all the
expenses accruing up to date, in
the proper care and protection of
the child. Thus ends a sensational
case that has created u lot

these parts.

A Missionary Scandal.

Senator Burton, of Kansas, has
returned from Hawaii with a report
of an outrageous swindle
that had been practiced in those
islands by some pretended New
England missionaries.
It appears that those sharpers
have been giving the simnle-mind
ed natives in change for their
lands certificates guaranteed to
admit them admission to Heaven.
A land office business has been
done in this line, and Senator
Burton states that abundant, evi
deuce of the manner in which
it had been carried has been
obtained.
Of course the swindlers have
no authority to represent any
church. They have merely taken
on the cloak of religion to gain
the confidence of their victims,
the number of whom is very large.
Senator Burton is a member of
the senatorial investigating committee
which has been inquiring
into conditions in Hawaii. He
seems to have done his work well
and good results may be expected
from his visit to the people who
have been victimized by thieves

Christain religion.
