New Orleans railway company,
which controls the trolley lines
of the city, struck today as the
result ot the refusal of the company
to accede to tlie demands ot
the dissatisfied men, who asked
for shorter hours and higher
wages. As a consequence no
cars were operated today.
The company ollicials adver
tised this morning for nine hun
dred men to handle the cars, ask
ing the mayor lor sullicient police
protection, but later the advertisement
was withdrawn
An effort was made to have
the men return to work and sub j
mit their differences to arhitra I
tion, hut no action was taken by
the striking employes of the
company.
So far there lias been no trace
of any disorder.

The New Orleans Strike.
OLDEST TOMB IN UNITED
STATES.
Said to bo That of Major Gooeh,
at Yorktown.
A short time ago a reporter of
the Virginia-Pilot paid a visit to
Yorktown and the famous Temple
farm, where Oornwallis sign
ed the terms of surreuder to the
allied American and French
forces. Temple farm lies a mile
and a half from Yorktown village,
and is now owned and occupied
by Major Mauck, a native
of Ohio and an officer in the
Northern army during the civil
war.
Major Mauck courteously
showed the writer the room in
the old Temple farm house where
Cornwallis signed the articles ol
surrender and other points of interest
on the farm.
After the dwellings the most
interesting spot is the site of the
old temple, and thereon the grave
of Major William Gooch, said to
he the oldest marked grave in
the United States. The grave is
covered bv a groat Hat slab of
stone adorned with the insignia
of heraldry, and bears the in
scripti m : "M?j. William Gooch,
of this parish, dyed Octob 29,
1C?:>5.'

The slab, though in an isolated
location, lias been visited by vandal
relic hunters, who have chiped
away a portion of the slab
and its inscription. Major Matiek
[ 'Ail! hereallor endeavor to see
that such sacrilege is stopped.
The temple was surrounded by
an outer wall, probably for defence
by those inside. Now the
temple and wall are all gone,
and only a few broken briekR re
main to mark the site. The
bricks of the temple and wall

years, was used later as a hay j
barn, but lias been repaired and

a woman who died at the age 51

than 37 murderers, who suffered
