A TRAIN WRECKER.
Two UnsurcoNKful Attempt Made
Near Chester.
The crime of train wrecking is
generally supported to have been
contemporaneous Wtlh that ot
train robbing. But while trains
are not wrecked frequently now -
udavs, it in because the railroads,
through their "section bosses,'
keep a superb patrol of the groat
highway of commerce, and frus
trate whatever attempts unmade.
A bold attempt to wreck the
Southern's fast train between
here htkI Charlotte a few night*
ago failed miraculously, and a
subsequent attempt the night
following also failed. There will
be no more attempts for the negri
fiond in in jail The arrest was
made by Mr. Geo. W. Bishop
special agent of the Soothe.::
rai Iroad.
i'lie fast train which left Columbia
at G 2o last Thursday
tilling i iui IUIU ?i i uuMiuutiwii
at the Shannon place .just beyond
Coruwoll's. The engineer was
going at a mighty clip, something
like GO mile? an hour, ami the
obstruction was on a curve. It
is marvelous that the train was
not derailed, especially when the
nature of the obstruction is
known.
Flat on the outer rail on the
curve was placed a piece of llat
iron about an inch thick and
about tour feet long. This itself
was almost enough to throw the
wheels of the engine from the
track. Hack of this was placed a
"fish-plate" or piece of iron which
is used to tie the ends of rails.
This wrs almost a sure agent of
destruction. But to make the
thing doubly pure, the would be
wrecker placed on each rail a
llint rock weighing 125 pounds.
When the great engine struck
this combination of obstruction
it hurled the iron bar far into ?
field nearby, tossed the "fish
plate'' to one side and pushed the
rocks from the track.
Friday night the attempt waf
repeated ; this time a smaller
rock was used. There was some
delay in reporting the matter
but in less than two days after
he got the information Mr.Bishoj:
had ^secured a confessi on Jfrorn
John Wallace, a negro boy It
years old, who lives near the
scene of the attempted wreck.
The section master suspected
a certain negro, but the latter,
in proving his innocence, threw
Rome light ou the crime and
staled that two or three negroc s
whom tie named hud been neon
in the neighborhood about that
hour. An old plantation darkey
corroborated this statement
John Wallace was among tinboys
named. Mr. Hishop found
the boy and charged him with
the crime. Waihu e w.l.ed Mid
Imp suspicions actions led to his
arrest. <)n the way to jail
he admitted having made the
second attempt but denied hiving

When visited by his parents
at jail, .John Wallace was ask; d
what he did with his younger
brother with whom he had ht;i: t

Wallace had piote.-ted against
tho younger brother going with
him, and when they arrived near
the Hcene ol' his intended crime
he left his brother on some pre
text and clipped down tho r
road track. After some evaOon
he finally confessed his guilt in
the first attempt, lie would have
