"? < rile GOiO ovsr II I ^1 " J ' ALMOST LIKE FICTION. The Case ot Truesdell the Old York County Negro. In regard to the case of the negro Truesdell recently brought back to the penitentiary after so long a period of freedom, as told at that time, the Fort Mill Times Bays: "Hollis Truesdell, colored, the escaped convict who was taken to the penitentiary on Tuesday of last week, made a clear confession to Officer Nivens while en route, admitting that he was the man wanted, told of his crime, and related the circumstances under which he escaped 30 years ago. Truesdell said that he, with a ppowd of other couvicts, was at Work on the State farm, and being a trusty, aout tu a spring some distance awav TTc had nn ! intention of running away when hrdeted to go after Water, but on reaching the spring a suddon desire for freedom overcame him, and he walked off unmolested. During the 30 years that have elapsed since his escape he has lived either in Gaston county, N. C., or adjoining sections of South Carolina. Truesdell stated that if the authorities ever made any effort to capture him he was not aware of it. "Officer Nivens says that on account of the old negro's ad vanced age and hi* good character during his two year's stay in Fort Mill township, he reconi mended him to the authorities at j Columbia, all of whom were strangers to Truesdell, ami succeeded in having him put to work again as a trusty. Officer Nivens thinks that if a petition was properly signed and presented to the governor there would be no trouble in obtaining a j<ar-1 don for the old man.
