The town of Union was
struck by another tornado one
day last week in which one man
was instantly killed and several
others injured by a falling house
upon which these men were
working at the time. Thi_ is the
second storm of that kind that
has struck Union this year and
the third that has struck that
county.

?Mr. J. A. Ilvalt'ssaw mill at
Van Wyck and a lot of lumber
were burned Saturday night about
midnight. The mill had been
running during the day and it is
supposed that the lire originated
from fire drawn out of t he furnace,
when the machinery was stopped.
The loss is probably $500. The
loss falls heavily on Mr. Hyatt
as he had uo insurance.
?Capt. F. W. Wagner of
Charleston has filed a claim
against the Exposition company
for $152,952.32 for noteu en
dorsed by him and for money
paid by him. The total indebtedness
of the Exposition com pan v
is $238,210,90.
?Some of our merchants will
change quarters between now
and September 1st. Mr. It. Miles
will move into the Riddle store
room recently vacated by the
Billings boys and Mr. J. J. Blackmou
will move into the rooiii now
occupied by i\lr. Miles, and as
soon as some necessary changet
in the shelving of the corner store
now occupied by Mr. Bluckmon
can be made, Dr. T. E. Fonder
burk of Charleston will open up
a stock of drugs and medicines in
that store. He hopes to be open
by September 1.

There will be a rousing bij
picnic at the mineral spring at
Heath Springs on Thursday, the
21st ,tho day the county candidate*
will speak there, and all are invited
to attend with baskets and
help to make the day thoroughly
enjoyable. There is no better
place lor a picnic, since there
is an abundance of stiudo and
as good water as there is in the
State.
Death of Mr. J no. M. Cauthen.
In the death of Mr. John M
Cauthen of the Heath Springs
section last Thursday morning
Lancaster county loses another
one of her oldest and most sueccsslul
citizens. He was bori
January 22, 1817, and was
therefore in his 80th year. Ii
his younger days ho lived in
Georgia and when the Mexicai
war broke out enlisted with tlu
volunteer troops of that State
and went to the front. After
that war he returned tc
Lancaster county and was latei
married to Miss Matilda Bruce
a daughter of the late James
Bruce. She with 8 children, I
sons and three daugters, sur
vive him. The sons are : Arista
\V B , James M., and M. Y., o
this county, and Mr. D. A. Cau
then of Mississippi. The daugh
ters are : Mrs. \V. L. Croxton o
Kershaw, Mrs. J. C. Stover anc
Mrs. Oscar W. Clark of lleatl
Springs.
Besides serving ill the Mexi
can war he served in the Con
federate war and mado a gooti
soldier. He was a good farmei
and an excellent citizen. H<

church. His remains buried a
