The candidates for United I
S.nintn will mionlc linn*
next Tuesday, the 19th Those
who are so fortunate as to he
present on that occasion will
hear some speeches of a very
high order. They are an able
lot of men and their campaign
has been conducted on a high
plane. All voters should hear
them.
The Yorkville Enquirer made
the following reference to Mr.
J. T. fiantt and his candidacy
for Secretary of State :
Mr J. T. Gantt who, as as
si?tnnt, has virtually been secretary
of state during the past
four years, seeks election to this
important office. As to the
qualifications or claims of the
other candidates, The Enquirer
knows little; but it is a fact
that the people of the state are
under much obligation to Mr.
Gantt for much valuable in for
mation about the office that they
have gotten through the newspapers
duiing die past four
years. Mr. Gantt has done a
great deal of work that he was
not required to do, and made
common with the general public,
much important information
that was previously held
principally by the lawyers. If
he should be elected and prove
as efficient in the position of
principal as he has been in the
position of first assistant, the
people will have no cause to
complain.
JIM TILLMAN'S TACTICS.
Col. Jim Tillman is going
around through the State posing
as a martyr of the newspapers,
because the newspapers are en
deavoring to inform the people
as to what manner of man he
is, how unreliable and how
devoid of the better qualities
that should characterize a man
who asks the people of South
Carolina for their votes to place
him at the head of the State
government. He does not undertake
to answer any of the
charges made against him. He
is shrewd enough to adopt the
martyr role in order, as he
thinks, to create sympathy and
arouse prejudice. He knows
he is guilty of the charges made
and that it would be folly for
him to undertake to disprove
them. He litis been called upon
time and time again to produce
proof that what is being charged
against him is false, but no
proof is produced If lie gets a
half respectable vote in Lancas
ter county we will be woefully
surprised. There tire four good
and honorable men that our
people can voie for for governor
instead of Jim Tillman, and

newspaper in this entire State
which is advocating the elec
tion of Jim Tillman to the office
of governor, we have wist not
of it. Is this not significant?
If lie was fit to he governor certainly
his homo papers would
advocate his cause.
"I Nlooil in a Or might
with my coat off and casffht thia
wretched cold," ways the aulferer. He
need not pay a heavy penalty if he
follow liia act of folly with an act
of wisdom. Soak the feet in hot water
with a few tpafpoonsfull of Perry
/ Davis' Painkiller in hot sweetened
1 water at bet time and be thankful
for so simple and speedy a way to
break up a cold. There D but one
