The salt water do d is confined iarge'y to the streams lying between the mouth r.i the Mississippi and the Sabine. All these are ordiuarily fresh wajer utreams. They and their tributaries have played a leading part in the development of Southwest Louisiana. The fresh water is pumped into lrricatini* ranala or?rt I ? n HliU UDUU 111 the cultivation of rice. More than $12,900,000, mainly New York capital, has been invested in these irrigating companies and it has proved a profitable investment, both to the companies and the country. The salt water visitation lirst showed itself about a month ago, when the irrigation companies were called on for an extra sup ply of water. Aftfr the water had been pumped into some of the rice fields it was discovered that it was salty and scalded the rice. From the rice being scald ed ai.il from lack of fresh water for irrigation the rice crops lias been seriously injured. Complaints have been pouring into New Orleans for last three weeks about the stream having turned salty. At the same time that the rice farmers of South-west Louisiana were complaining ol the injury done them by the conversion of their waterways from fresh to salt water streams, the fishermen, professional and amateur, on the Louisiana and Mississippi coast were sending in reports that never in the history of the Gulf was fishing so good. It has not been necessary to tow or sail out for rodlish and other salt water varieties as is . usually the case, but they are found immediately alongshoie. Flounders, trout, rcdfi?h, sheep head and bass were caught, in abundance. The Fourth cf July fishing was the best ever known and nearly all the fishermen \ J caught more than they could bring home.
