K. FAIRBANK COMPANY. MINE EXPLOSION. Eighty-Seven Itodiea Taken From the Wreck. i Johnstown, Pa., July 11.? Yesterday afternoon there was a fearful explosion in a mine belonging to the Cambria Steel company and many of the miners were suffocated to death by the gases in the mine. Attempt* at rescue were out o^ the question for awhile, and some of the brave would-be rescuers lost their lives t_ 11.? ..it i ill iue auciupt. Up to early today the rescuing parties have succeeded in taking out seventy five bodies from the ruins of the explosion. It is now estimated that between 200 and 450 miners perished. The explosion was at the mine under Westmont Hill known as the Klondyke. The disaster is only a little less frightful than the flood of 1889 in the cost of life, and it will take several (lays to determine the number of dead. At least 450 men are imprisoned. Many have been saved by numn ing in fresh air. A'l night hundreds of brave men have been fighting death in a vain attempt to reach the scene of the explosion through the gas filled chambers of the colliery. Four victims of the Klondyke section have been brought to the surface alive, and hundreds ol anxious women and children remain at the entrance of the mine, waiting for news of loved ones. The en tire city is in mourning. An explosion of lire damp caused the! disaster. Johnstown, I'a.. July 11.? i Eighty-two bodies ol miners killed in the explosion in the) rolling mine of the Cambria com pany yesterday atternoou were recovered today. Some of the miners say the cause ol the ex- i plosion was the use of a naked j light by a party of Slavs. A con-j scrvative estimate puts the uutn-1 bor ot dead at betuton 150 and! 200.
