Courtship in Spain and Italy.
In Spain the courtship begins
with gifts of flowers, and the
wedding ends with a shower of
blossoms on the roof of the new
home. The suitorbegins his courtship
by asking for a gourd of
water at the home where the
object of his affections lives. If
this request is granted he may
persist in his attentions, but if it
ia denied the matter ends there.
Later the man calls again, accompained
by musicians and torchbearers,
and while the mandolin
players strum their insruments
the lover's companion makes his
advances. Any time during the
courtship the suitor may be rejected
by the gift of a pumpkin.
Three times he must make for
mal suit for a wife, as his request
cannot be granted at first. But
if her father refuses the third time
he may consult a magistrate, who
demands that the daughter be
produced or that her father gives
consent to the marriage?provided
he is an honorable man. He can
then carry off his bride. But this
emergency does not often arise.
No maiden can witness the
marriage of an Italian woman
no matter how intimate she has
been as a friend, but matrons
accompany her to the church.
Neither can a girl enter the house
of her lover; and so emphatic is
this rule that it is considered
necessary to pass by the house of
her lover in such a public way
that all can be satisfied that she
does not enter it. The lover gives
presents according to the seasons
? cake at Easter, rosebuds at the
feast of St. Marks and almond
paste atChristmas. In addition to
bonbons and confectionery the
groom sends the furture bride all
the jewelry he can afford, especially
finger rings. Sunday is the
only lucky day in the week for
weddings, as all others have some
omnious meaning. Ifthe wedding
is on Monday insanity is threatened
; Thursday is wilches day;
a Tuesday wedding means great

Jumped From Brooklyn Bridge.
New York June 15.?A young
man who was a passenger on a
Brooklyn bridge car this evening
suddenly left his seat and spraDg
over the bridge railing to the
river below. The body has not
yet been recovered. Those who
noticed the man before he made
the .jump from the bridge say he
was apparently about 27 years
old and was well drefsed. I'olice
Dorn was the nearest person to
him when he jumped. Dorn saw
him alight from the car, and
divining the stranger's purpose,
started after him. The stranger
said: "Don,t you touch me," and
then, crying out, ''good bye,''
went over the railing into the
river, liis body reappeared only
once after the plunge.
