D., has returned from Greenville, where he attended the commence menta of Furman University and the Greenville Female College. He ia greatly interested in the work of these two institutions and especially in that of Furman University. We obtained from him the following : The Furman University session which has just closed has been au unusually prosperous one. The attendance lias been large. The number on the roll reached two hundred and forty three. The character of the work done was satisfactory in a high degree. 1 had occasion to look somewhat closely into affairs there and I was really surprised, and agreeably so, at the improvements which have already been made and which are now in progress. The social element which has been such a power in Wake Forest college and many other institutions of learning, has been skillfully introduced to the great advantage and development of the boys. The citizens of Greenville are acting very generously in their kind considerations of the students in their midst. The degree of Master of Arts was conferred upon two students, the degree of Bachelor of Arts was conferred upon ten students, Raehplor nf Sr.ipnpn iinrm f?.-n This is a good showing. The students have worked hard, have been orderly and respectful, and have been widely interested in Y. M. C. A. and other Christian woik. The school of ''Oratory and Expression" under the cln-rge of Prof. Currie deserves p- ecial mention. One of his st,. 3nts has taken three medals and is a candidate for more. Plans lor better work in this school are on hand. The honarary degrees were conierred as fellows : Doctor of Laws on George 11. Denny, Ph. D., President of Washington and Lee Unitersity. The degree of Doctor Litterarum on Prof. H. T. Cook, of Furman University. The degree of Doctor of Divinity on Rev. J. A. Brown, M. A., Th. M., of Due West, S. C. It is necessary to increase the endowment fund to the amount of $50,000.00. of which amount $25,000.00 has been subscribed without any special effort. The prospects lor next session are bright.
