building. The bids were opened
yesterday afternoon late. The

?For two nights last week
the weather was very unusually

summer were brought into requisition

moved and tires built lor awhile
in the morning. The temperaturo
was very eloe to the frost
point, and cotton tlopped its oars,
'ooked sick and ret used to take
nourishment, But it is better
now.

taught by Miss Annie Denny,
closed a very prosperous and
satisfactory five months' session
last Friday, and Mis9 Denny has
gone to her home at Vaughns
ville, S. C., to spend the vacation,
having spent the night here
with Mrs. 8 T. Blackmon. She
+ will return the latter part of the
^ summer and open a seven months'
term for whicn the citizens ot
that progressive neighborhood

have already arranged. They
are highly pleased with their
teacher and she in turn is delighted
with her patrons and pupils.
?The condition report of the
cotton crop made by the Government
yesterday shows95.1 against i

year.
?Senator B. L. Oaughman of
Lexington, a candidate for railroad
coinmissiner was in town
yesterday, and made this office a
brief but pleasant call.
?Sheriff Hunter and Night Policemen
McManus and Addison
captured six negroes Saturday
night while they were gambling
in a house near the Colored Industrial
institute. They were
brought before Mayor Wylie
Monday and each fined $2.50, replenishing
the town treasury to
the amount of $15. When the
sheriff made an attempt to enter
the house one of the negroes
jumped through a window and
' burnt the wind," but was given

The trustees of the Lancaster
Graded School District have
opened the bids made for the
$15,000 of bonds to he issued to
construct the now school building
They received four bids that
fully complied with the advertised
terms ot bids, the highest
being for $15,755.50 by F. M.
Stafford vV Co. of Chattanooga,
Tenn. The lowest was for $15,
525 by the Robinson Humphrey ;
| Co. of Ohio. The bonds have)
been awarded by the committee
to the highest bidder. That price j
gives them a premium of #755 50
for tlieni, which means that the
purchasers will get less than 5
per cent, per annum on their in
vest ment.
This shows how cheap money
can bo obtained when a desirable
collateral is offered lor it.

The tenth session of the Lancaster
Graded school will close,
Friday, June the sixth. An exhibit
of school work will be open 1
to public inspection from nine to
eleven a. m. This exhibit is not I
so much lor show purposes, as to
afford each parent an opportunity 1
of examining the work of his!
own and other children. The
exhibit will comprise examination
papers, class exercises, drawings,
etc.

Death of Dr. If. V Massey
A telegram was received here
Monday morning by Mrs. S. N.
Watson announcing the death
that morning of her maternal
grandfather, Dr. II.. V. Masse}',
of Matthews, N. C. Dr. Massey
was well and favorably known by
many of the people of this place
and of the county, he having
been born and reared in this
coifnty and having lived in it for
many years. lie was twice mar
ried and six children survive him
by the first wife: Mrs. S. M.
Hums of Chester, Mrs. Mamie
iStarkey of Texas, Mr. W. R.
Massey of Ilarrisburg, N. (J., Mr.
B. F. Massey of Matthews, N. C.,
Mr Columbus Massey of Florida,
and Mrs. Lizzie Fhifer of Florida.
His second wife and two children
survive him. 11 is remains were
interred at Matthews yesterday.
Mrs. Burns from Chester attended
the funeral.
Dr. Massey was an excellent

oiu gentleman. lie was a mem
her of the Baptist church and
lived a consistent Christian life.
He was 87 yeara of age.
