Do the teachers employed in
country schools realiz- that
they can work a might' rovolu
lion for good? Many of t a school
houses in the country m unsightly
objects. That i- not the
fault originally of t? .chers, but
of those who caused th^m to be
built in unsightly spots, or took
tio pains to make them attractive
in appearance. If they remain
unatractive that will be the fault
of the teacher. Children naturally
love llowers. Most ot them
love to work among 11 >wers, and
nearly all would with a little encourgement.
Let every teacher mark out
flower beds around the school
^ house, and have the children
plant them with llowers, and
then cultivate them. Let a particular
bed be assigned to each
* class, then a generous rivalry will
arise to 6ee which bed is best cultivated
and cared for. Many an
instructive lesson can be taught
while cultivating. Botany is one
of the moist attractive of studies,
and with a little art the teacher
can make each leaf, each flower,
teach 1 tfl particular lesson. Show
the children how a plant breatheR
why a plant grows in one kind
of soil, while another requires a
very different variety ; why one
requires a great deal of water,and
another must have plenty of
shade; why one drinks a great
deal of water, and another will
thrive on a very little.
Thus beauty and instrution may
be joined. When a child goes to
school through a bower of flowers
it feels better, studies better and
carries home some of the taste
? for the beautiful it has taken in
on the way, and it will not be[
long until flowers are cultivated
and borne made more beautiful
thereby. Some one has said that
music is the great civilizer. In
this flowers will keep an even
pace with music.
If teachers do what they can

the charge of the erection of auch
