where for three years lie was in
charge of Ehenezer Academy, a
very flourishing institution. In
1888, he moved back to his old
home in Pleasant Valley and
resumed teaching in that community.
At one time his school
attracted considerable patronage
from all portions of this
county as well as from other

S. L. Porter, Messrs ST. Blackmon
and W. P> Cautlien of this
place.
Mr. S hurley was a leading
member of the Pleasant Valley
Baptist church, taking an active
interest and a leading part in
all the work of both church and
Sunday school. JIo was the
most active of their deacons and
superintendent of the Sunday
school. He was also a very hightoned
Christian man and one of
our best citizens, and in his
death the PleasantValley people
especially sustain a great loss,
lie leaves a widow and a host
of friends throughout the county
to mourn his death, llis remains
were laid to rest in the
burying ground of the Pleasant
Valley Baptist church Sunday
afternoon in the presence of a
large concourse of sorrowing

friends, after a funeral service
conducted by Rev. A. L. Stough,
