The health of this community
is very good at this writing.
People are about through planting
except low land corn. Upland
corn is not a good stand yet, but
with rain it will coon be ready
for the plow?. (tottor. ic coming
lip nicely ar.d chopping will soon
be the order of the day.
Mr. Editor, if yon could spend
a few days in this section you
would see at a glance that the
farmors are not depending entirely
upon a cotton crop. You
would see fields of wheat, molasses
cane, peas, pinders, corn, oats,
pens of hogs and chickens, and in
fact everything that goes to keep
an up-to date section moving.
Gardens are very promising.
We will soon have plenty of vegetables
to help out with the fatbacks.
I see Mr. Hilton says the farmers
over in his section are bust-j
ling, and that he saw one man
pulling a plow and a woman covering
cotton seed with a hoe and
that the farmers are not dependent
on high-priced mules fed on
higher-priced corn. Down here
you can see plows running with
out mule, horBa or man, and a
few who do not cover any need at
all. How's this?
Mrs. Emma Cauthen of Lancaster
visited her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. L. Bell, recently.
Master Willie Bell, grandson
of Mr. J. L. Bell, has returned to
his home at Hartsville after a
visit to his grandfather here.
The family of Mr. L. P. Powers
will move hack to this county
from Columbia in the near future
Mr. Powers, it will he remembered,
died in Columbia a few
weeks ago.
We understand that Rev. S. N.
Watson has sent in his resignation
as nastor of Beaver Crpek church
which was to take effect on the
first: Sunday in Mav, 4th instant.

The weather was extremely
favorable for prosecuting farm
work, which advanced rapidly,
and, were it not for Hie lack o<
moisture in places that renders
still soils too hard to cultivate,
the conditions could not very
well be bettered. Fields are well
prepared, well cultivated and
clean ; germination has been
fairly satisfactory ; stands are
generally full ; growth has been
rapid recently, and the only untoward
condition is the need o( a
general rain, and this need is not
urgent except in spots that, however,
represent large areas in the
aggregate.
Upland corn has about all been
planted, and on many bottoms
the work is finished. Stands aro
fairly good, but have been injured
by worms and birds, making some
replanting necessary. Corn has
quite generally received its first
working and in many places has
been cultivated the second time.
Cotton is nearly all planted,
with some still to plant in all
sections. It is coming up to fair
stands, and as vet has reouired
little or no replanting, although
rain is needed to bring up recent
plantings. Some fields have been
cultivated. Chopping out has
begun and will be general next
week. Sea island cotton is nearly
all planted, and, where showers
occurred, is coming up nicely.
Tobacco has about all been
transplanted, and with few scattered
exceptions good stands have
been secured, and the crop is
doing excellently. The acreage
: has been increased over last year

be expected and is coming up tc
good stands, while planting is not

An Ordinance ,
for the Promotion of Health in
the Town ot Lancaster, S. C.,
and Providing Piinlshment For
the Violation ot Same.
Section 1 That an assessment of
me dollar per year to be paid on or
jefore November 1st, of the year 11)02,
itid at the same time in every year
thereafter, is lnreby made beforehand
Against all persons occupying premises
within the corporate limits of the
town of Lancaster for each ar;d every
privy located upon said premises.
Sec. 2. That this assessment shall
be payable whether or not said premises
shall be vacated during the year.
Sec. 3. That any person or persons,
who shall make default in paying the
assessments as herein provided, besides
the other penalties herein, shall
pay an additional amount of fifteen
per cent for any and every such default
and shall be liable for the same
cost for collecting delinquent taxes
now provided by the laws of this
State
Soc. 4. That any violation of any of
the provisions of this ordinance shall
be [punishable by tine or imprisonment
in the discretion of the Mayor.
