Manila, April 13.?The merchants
of Lagnncy, in bouMi S imarines
province, Luxon, have
sent a cable message to Uen.CJhaf

troops be not, withdrawn from
Lagoncy. The merchants a~?unanimously

the advance of the soldi- rs coming
to their rescue and that such action
would lead to irreparable
damage. The merchai la lurther
declare the local police to be insufficient
to guarantee order.
This is droved, they say. hv the
fact the detachments of American
troops have been withdrawn
from the neighboring ??>? is of

the local police have l>e?-n unable
to suj)press the assaults, iobberies

Cholera in Manila.
Manila, April 13.?The cholera
situation in Manila continues
much i he same, hut the conditions
in the provinces are becoming
alarming. The total choleracases
in Manila up to date is 245, while
there has been 102 deaths lioiu
the disease. In the province
there has been 418 cases and 318
deaths.
The United States army trans
port ttrant, while on her way to
Samar island, put into Legaspi,
^ in southern Luzon, having on
board a teamster who had the
cholera. The grant asked lor
* assistance, but was placed in
^ quarantine for live days. As her
supplies of water, food and coal
was limited she decided to return
to Manila, lhe teamster died ot
the disease. Four Americans have
been attacked with cholera in
Manila and one of them died.

Weekly Crop Bulletin.
Columbia, S. C. April 15, 1902. '
?The early part of the week
ending 6 a. in., Monday, April
14, was unseasonably cold, with 1
heavy frost and thin ice in exposed
places to within about
thirty miles of the coast, on the
9th. The close of the week had
about normal temperature. Light
frost occurred in the northwestern
portions on the 10th and 11th.
The frost of the week nipped
some corn, yellowed sumo oats,
probably injured poaches slightly
in places, but otherwise did no
j material damage, owing to the
backwardness of the season.
On the 7th, there a bene
Jicial rain that covered tl.- e tire
State, and ranged in amounts)
trom one-third to over an inch, j
! fr? places it was accompanied by
hail. There was a snow flurry ir.
Newberry County or {!;- S'!.. Tin. |
-sunshine was about normal. Iiig'n (
winds prevailed on the 8ili audi
9lh. The week, whs generally j
f' rorable for farm work, and
| rapid progress was made in pro .
uring lands for sprint; planting, j
.\cept on bottom lands which are i
I still too wet to plow.
| In the southeastern and east I
central counties corn planting is
nearly finished, and much is up
to poor stands, while some has
been replanted. Birds and cutworms
have injured stands. In
the central counties upland corn
planting is well underway, while
over the western it has only bogun.
Not much cotton has been
planted anywhere, scarcely any
in the western portion of the'
Shite, but over the eastern portions
tho bulk of the crop will be
planted during the present week.
Rice is being planted, in all
the regions where grown, under
favorable conditions. Tobacco
plants are plentiful but small;
transplanting will not begin for
some time. Truck had favorable
weather, the rain fail having been
particularly beneficial along the
coast.
Wheat is generally promising. I
I aithough email, with, however,
I numerous exceptions where the
crop is poor. Oats are exceeding
ly variable in condition,with only
a few localities where the crop
is entirely satisfactory.
Gardens are backward. Pastures
all'ord grazing over the eastern |
portions of the State only. Fruits
are late in blooming, and the majority
of correspondents regard it
as sale to date, but in Lexington
County and a few other localities,!
peaches have been materially in-1
.Hired but not all killed.
I Lancaster.?Heath Springs: The;
cold weather holds back growth
of all vegetation; much corn
planted, but it comes up slowly;;
not much cotton planted, wheat,
oats and rve may do well; fruit
not all killed; gardens backward.

A curious American arrived
in London yesterday morning.
Here are a few of the questions
he asked in the evening: Why
lo butchers wear bite aprons,
which will not show dirt, while
assistants in boot shops wear
immaculate white aprons? Why
is footwear "boots," while the
boy who polishes them is a "shoe"
black? Why is thore no direct
'bus from London Bridge station
to Waterloo? Why is the post
rostante in the largest city of the
world not open all night? Why
many women wear straw hats in
the winter? Why can't you breakfast
in a restaurant within reason
able time after "sunup?" When
lime or her death. In one of the
houses Mr. Lodge was born,
which fact makes his conduct
all the more flagrant in his townmen's
eyes.

Timely information given Mrs. Geo.
Long, of New Straitsviib-, Ohio, prevented
a dreadful tragedy and saved I
two lives. A frightful cough ha?l long
kept her awake every night. She had
tried many remedies and doctors but
steadily grew worse until urged to try
!>r. King's New Discovery. One bottle
wholly cured her, and she writes this
marvelous medicine also cured Mr,
Long of a severe attack of Pneumonia.
Such cures are positive proof of the
matchless merit of this grand remedy
for curing all throat, chest and lung
