King turned over to the county treasurer Monday $52.70 in full of fines and costs for his oflioe for the quarter ending February 1st. This amount . is $2.70 in excess of Mr. King's salary for the entire year. Uis office, therefore, is no expense to the county, but as a source of income. Nine Fussed, Nineteen Failed. The recent examinations for teachers' certificates resulted in' nine certificates,! wo of them being i first grade and seven of them secpnd grade. Of the seven second grade ceitificates, four wore issued to whites and three to eel. ored. The two first grado cer- ! tificates went to white applicants. , The total number that undertook the examination was 28, there; ; being six white and 22 colored, i1 Collar Hone Jtroken. Mr. James Neal, son of Mr. j Elmoro Neal of the New Cut* isection met with an accident a , few days ago that resulted in the breaking of his collar hone, j' Ho got upon a mule to ride over to see a sick neighbor and from some unaccountable cause tlie j mule fell and threw the young; man to the ground with the result above stated. YVith.er.spoon occurred at the! family home here Sunday morning about 11 o'clock after an extended illness. Mr. Witherspoonj was a sen of the late Hou. George MeC. He leaves to mourn Ids death one sister, Miss Annie Witherspoon, and three brothers, Dr. M. R. Witherspoon and Messrs Claude and W. T* Witherspoon. The harness were badly torn up and one wheel of the wagon broken. But strange as it may seem, Mr. Dunlaphimself never got seriously hurt, though lie was bruised up some and had the skin knocked oil* iu several places. ? ? Mrs. 0. K. VanDeusan, of Kilbourn, Wis, was allbcted with a stomach trouble and constipation for a long time. Death of Mr irit Txeitty Mr William B Twitty died yesterday afternoon at tho home o " his daughter hero, Mrs Mary M ell wain, after an illness of about, three weeks of bladder troubles. Mr Twitty was 7G years of ago, and is the last of the family, save one brother, Mr. John W. Twity of Valdosta, Ga. Ho married Miss Martha Well wain who died somo several years ago. They had only one child who is now Mrs Mary Moll wain. Mr. Twity served through the Confederate war and made a fi 10 soldier. He was a member of Col 12th S. C. Regiment. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was an honest upright man and an excellent citizen. His remains will be intorred this fafternoon at Douglas church. Tho sympathy of the public goes out to the bereaved daugh ter who only a short whilo ago was bereft of her husband. A It fitter Plan Mr W Q Caskey, county supervisor, tried the experiment of bt ilding a bridge with the chain g; ng instead of letting the work by contract to tlie lowest bidder. 11 > selected the bridge across Flat Creek to make the test on. He hired one carpenter at a total expense of $18 and placed him in charge of the ehaingang when he was not there himself. When he c< mp'.eted the bridge a few days ago and figured up the cost, he found it was just as he thought it would be?very much less than under the plan usually heretofore pursued. This bridge was 170 feet long and cost $170, while another bridge, 10 foot shorter, built last, fall under the old plan, cost $285, a difference of $115 in favor of Mr Caskey's plan. It may be that a good portion of that saving comes in consequence of Mr Caskey himself being a practical mechanic, and therefore able to make ant. his own bills and not have to pay a mechanic a big price to do it.
