The census of last year places
Lancaster's population at 1477
This, of course, does not include
the mill population, neither does
it include the scores of people
who have moved to Lancaster
since last .Tune. If both of these
classes were counted, Lancaster's
population would reach very close
to 3,000.
In 1880, Lancastor had but
1004 inhabitants. The pain in
her population, therefore, in the
last decade is nearly 300 per cent.,
counting the mill population as a
part of Lancaster's nonulation. ?si
it manifestly should bo counted.
The population of Kershaw is
027 while that of Heath Springs
is 260.
The population of some other
towns of tha State are :
Camden, 2,441
Charleston, . 55,807
Che raw', 1,151
Chester, 4,075
Chesterfield, 308

Mr. Editor: ? I'lease allow mo a
small space in your paper for a
abort letter. We.have passed on
many bills since I wrbte last ;
otno we killed and some we
passed. The following is a list of
acts ratified on the 71b inst., by
the 1 loose and Senate, and will
become laws when signed by the
Governor : To ralily Amendment
to the constitution to Authorize
the General Assembly to provide
[by law, for condemnation of lan
lor drainage. To provide for
building and State exhibit at th
South Carolina and West India
Exposition. To validate drawin
of all juries for the year 1001
Ceding to city of Charleston cei
tain marsh lands for a i.ava
station. To prevent sale of good
within one half of a mile of a re
ligious camp ground. To requir
the county commissioners tosho\
nature of claim in published re
ports. To require all courts t
take judicial notice of laws an
ordinances of any town or city
Ceding land on Sullivan's Islan
to the United States government
To regulate bonds of public off
cers. There were other acts rat
ifled, at the same time, hut no
of interest to our county.
The child labor bill has bee?
brought up in the Senate, and i
passed that body by one vote
Some of the senators who thu
pushed the bill say it is fo
humanity's sake that they wantci
the l>ill passed, and they amende*
I he bill so that if a widow wil
make oath that sho has to hav
her children to help earn a livin,
she cat? work them at any age?
where is the humanity in that
If humanity does not roach th
orphan children who does it reach
I believe there is more politica
bunkum in it than anything else
By a vote of GO to 33 the Hons
refused to pass a bill requirin]
every child between the ages of
and 12 years of ages to at ten*
school three months in each year
The white children of our count;
do that now and I did not wan
to force thousands of low-countr,
negroes into the schools for th
whites to pay for; so I vote
against the bill.
The House has passed a bill t
appropriate $100,000 more fo
the common schools which is th
only poor man's school. Th
House also voted $200,000 t
pension Confederate soldiers,
can't tell what the Senate will d
with these hills. I expect, to vot
against the child labor hill who
it reaches the House. I hav
given my reasons in a former let

will close as I have asked for to
