The new sovereign of th?United
Kingdom has elected to bo known
as Edward, a nam* born, as ha
s*ys, by six of his ancestor*, and
he was accordingly proclaimed
yesterday as King Edward VII.
In speaking of the six Edwards
as hip "ancestors" he of couro*l
used that word in its original

as a matter of fact, he is descend
od from only four of the numbered
Edwards, the fifth and sixth

outset of her reign strongly commanded
to her people by the
tact that she was the first really
English sovereign they had had

her son in. The King's English
ancessory is actually older than
the name of England itself,dating
away back to the time when the
Saxon part of the island was still

of Edward.
We may perhaps best begin
the King's genealogy with the
early Saxon family of (Jerdio a

of England". Egbert's son was
