at his homo at Clark's 11 ill, in
Edgefield county, Saturday, in
his 7??th year. For more than
40 years he has been a conspicuous
figuro in the political
circles in this state. JIo was
horn August 26, 18^(1, at Curry
ton, Edgefield county. Ho
was the son of Benjamin Ryan
Tillman, for whom the senior
senator from this state was
named. His mother's name was
Miss Sophia Hancock.
He received his first education
at home, but when quite young
was sent to the famous Agricul
tural and Mechanical institution
at. Penfield, Ga. lie afterward
studied under a private tutor at
Greenwood, and thence lie went
to Harvard where he remained
0110 year. He later read law
under Chancellor F II Wardlaw
and was admitted to the bar in
18 17. The next year he opened
bis law office at Edgefield courtbouse
where ho continued the
practice of his profession until
the year 18G0.
Tn the year 18(12 he entered
the ariny of the Confederacy as
a private and as a member of
the Fourth regiment of state

the Second South Carolina artillery

took part in the battle of A very 8boro
and a number of artillery
duels in the latter part of the
war and surrendered under (Ion
Joe Johnston
For six years before the war
he served his district in the
legislature, and at that time he
was considered a "Red French
Anarchist," because of his great
fight to abolish the parish sys
torn, his advocacy of smaller
counties and of the election of
presidential electors by the people.
The principles he then
advocated he later had the
pleasure of seeim; put into practice,

In 18(54, while still in the
army, lie was elected to the legislature,
and in 1805 was chosen
senator from Edgefield county.
In this year he succeeded in
overthrowing the parish system,
which was championed by Gen
.lames Connor. This fight was
won by a majority of 1 vote.
In 1805 Col Tillman was sent
to the constitutional convention,
hut the instrument prepared by
ihis convention was annulled
by Federal bayonets These
same bayonets eject mI Colonel
Tillman from his seat in ihe
state senate.
Soon after 1885, Mr. Tillman
went to Central America, whore
he joined Gen Walker ot Filibuster
fame, was wounded and
taken prisoner,hut was released
after promising again not to
meddle with the institutions or
government of the country He
then returned home and again
entered politics He ran for
congress and unsuccessfully
contested the seat of Robert
Smalls in the Forty fifth congress
lie was elected to the
?<th congress and took his scat
but was again ousted to make
room for Smalls He finally
secured his seat and in the
oOth and 51st congresses ho was
a member of the committee on
patents He served with distinction
for seven terms till '92,
when he was defeated by Mr \V
.1 Talbert of Kdgefield by reason
of tin1 upheaval in politics led
by B R Tillman.
Ho always considered himself
a reformer and a man of
the people until the Reformers
of 1890, as he expressed it
