An Appeal for Reduction.

of Pinar Del Rio visited
Gov. Gen. Wood today with a pe
tition for a reduction of 25 per
cent, in the tariff on sutrar of the
United States against Cuba, and
of 50 per cent in the export duty
on tobacco, in order to enable the
planters to recoup on these important
island industries.
Gov. Gen. Wood is favorable to
the petition and will recommend
to the secretary of war that it be

Smith, a broom maker, employed
by the Schneiderwind
Broom Factory, has positively
identified Pat Crowe as the man
who in his presence rented the
Schneiderwind house on Grover
street, which was used as a prison
for Eddie Cudahy, while he was
being detained for the $25,000
ransom. This is the first posiii\0
personal recognition of any
of the bandits and establishes
the most important point yet
developed in the case. When
asked to identify the picture of
Pat Crowe, in connection with
the case, Smith said .
"You need not show me any
picture, I know that man. It
was Pat Crowe. I could have
told any police officer the same
thing had he called upon me.
I was husy at the broom machine
when Pat Crowe called to
rent the house and paid no attention
to him during his talk
with Mrs. flclmeidcrwind. Then
I thought L recognized the voice
and stopped my machine long
enough to get a good look at
him, I saw at a glance that the
man was none other than Pat
Crowo, a man whom I have
known for ten years. I am as
positive as to the identification
of Pat Crowe as I would ho of
my own brother."
Tim Cudahy family remained
at homo today, and beyond giving
out an exact copy of the
text of the latest letter received
by him from the kidnappers,
Mr. Cwbdiv refused to see any
representatives of the press. The
orthography of the letter is
poor, as is also the writing,
which is in the same hand as
the latter demanding the ransom.
The postmark shows that tinletter
was mailed at the postoffice
at 8 a. ni., Saturday, Dec.
'22, showing cloarly that on? of
the gang of abductors was in
1 i 10 postoftico at that date. That
tho origin was tho same is attested
by Gen. John C. Cowin,
who saw both missives. The
letter reads :
"Cudahy, if you value the
boys life at the price of a bullet

at once. And let woll Anough
alone, if You don't do thi?*, we
will finish the Job with a Ballot,
if any man, whether Oilty
or innocent is over arestod A

Mr. Cutlahy says he dots not
