There is no land of conJ sequence to salute the new cenitury; no human eye save perI haps that of some sailer will be there to welcome its entrance. The Friendly islanders will be the first people to live in the new century. Tho date line, as it may be called, lies in the Pacific just to the east of their group. It will be Tuesday to them, but all the rest of tho j world will be living in Monday j and enjoying some phase of the closing hours of the nineteenth century. At Melbourne tho ! people will be just going to bed, i for it will bo about 10 o'clock there..
