SURVEYORS IN UNION.
They Set Up Stones and Used
Big Words and Knew What
Were Talking About.
Mr. Sledge Tatem, topographer
on the United States geological
survey, from Washington, accompanied
by Mr. O. C. Caldwell, ar
rived in Union Tuesday night for
the purpose of establishing the
meridian lino and setting uu the
meridian stone at this point.
They began their observation
of the North star at 8 o'clock and
and the work was continued tor
an hour, and a point was located
in front of and to the loft of the
graded school building. This
point was marked and they retired
until three o'clock Wednesday
morning, when they returned
to verify the records by further
observations. This spot was lo
c.attd for the purpose of placing
the meridian stone, which arrived
on the train from Columbia Wed
nesday.
It was an unusual and interest
ing light to watch them in their
work. They watched the North
star with as much interest as one
would watch his favorite on the
track, and indulged in geological,
latitudinal, longitudinal and topographical
phraseology, to the
utter confusion of ye unlightcned

couple of pleasant gentlemen and
are very kind to give any infor
niation lequired. We can not
think just now of all Mr. Tatem
did tell about this interesting
subject, that is, we cnnnot re
member his exact words. Suffice
it to say that ho is thoroughly
familiar with the subject in hand,
and seemed to be as familiar with
old iMr. North Star and his mean-,
derings as we are with the office
devil. We just simply take his
word for all he said about the
business, the only appreciable
difference between he and we is,
he knew what he was talking
about?we didn't.
Wo gathered, however, that
these gentlemen, sent out by the
government to establish this meridian
line and set up these stone*,
have been at work a month in
this state covering an era of sev

Having sot up the meridian stones
in Columbia, Lexington, Chester
and Spartanburg, they completed
their work by setting up the last
stone in Union. This stone will
he a great assistance to the sur
veyors of the county as a means
of testing their compasses for
accuracy.

another party who passed through
Union some ten days ago, running
a precise spirit level line
along the railroad, with Norfolk
as a starting point.
The main object in view by the
government in making these sur
veys is for the purpose of constructing
an accurate topograph
ical and geological map, which is
to be published at an early date,
posibly some time in January.
The elevation above sea level has
has also been ascertained at this
