PEOPLE WILL BITE AT GIL
DEI) HOOKS
Ami Wall Street Seems to Be
Full of Fishermen.
New York, Dec. T?.?As the
result of investigations made by
Assistant District Attorney
Byrne, C. \V. Morgan, trading
a: C. \V. Morgan's bookkeeper,
Michael Ilart, were today both
arrested on the charge of conspiracy
and grand larceny. The
men were locked up in police
headquarters.
The detective confiscated all
the books and naners in the of
tico of Morgan and in the ollices
of L. E. Van Riper and John R
McK.cn/ie, discretionary brokers.
Van Riper ami McKen/io
liad left their offices. It was
found that the written matter
in the hooks of Van Riper and
McKonzie It i 1 !>oo:t torn out,
leading tlm police to suppose
that they had been informed of
their coming.
The attention of Assistant
District Attorney Byrne was
directed to the matter through
his work in the Sliera ease, the
defendant having been arrested
for, it is said, securing a sum
of money from Gen. Daniel E.
Sickles, three weeks ago, which
was to lie invested in stocks.
Shera's bookkeeper, it is alleged,
intimated that such methods
wore in vogue with other brokers
in Wall street.
A thorough investigation was
made tind it was found that McKonzie
A Van Rioer did an ex
tensive business throughout the
United States unci Canada. They
fn?iii out as nir.'.iy as !ofters
a week, some of which told
how easily money was made in
Wall street, and others explaining
certain details, the money
to be sent to Morgan & Co., or
C. B. Lawrence, Jr.
Van Riper it McKenzie, it is
allged advised each other of
their success with the prospective
customer and they in turn
advised Morgan. If a man sent
inonev to Morgan he would advise
the brokers.
Morgan had an office at Thirty-third
street and Broadway,
and the police say he had various
offices throughout the country.
The complainant against the
persons is Wm. Bailv, a mill
owner of Matteawan, N. J. The
police say they have 30 others
who will testify against the
men, and one of the 30 admits
having lost $20,000 through
deals.
When the police entered Morgan's
office to arrest him they
found a man whose name Capt.
Kct'lu-ky refused to divulge at
this time, inquiring as to what
had become of his money. The
man went with the detective to
police hoadqiiai tors, where he
said he had placed $500 with
the brokers and had made $234
last month. He had left, the
$500 with the brokers to be traded
with and on Tuesdav after
noon ww told that it had boon
used to purchase sugar at 134,
which was the highest figure.
When he impured as to the profits
tin' man claims he was informed
that sugar 'went down'
and his money was wiped out.
Assistant District Attorney
Brvne says that the strongest
point against the brokers is the
fact that in their advices sent
to men who sent money to Morgan
some were told conditions
, wore favorable and that others
were told the same day that
conditions were unfavorable on
the same stock. Mr. Byrne says
that while Morgan, who is a
member of the Consolidated
( Stock exchange, undoubtedly
made some transactions which
are in the records, be made
other transactions which counterbalanced
the ones be made
for his customers.
