The attendance upon divine service was just as nearly universal throughout this community as the church buildings would permit. At the Methodifit church the love feast exercises began at t)liev. T. G. Herbert conducting the ser vice. After a service of song, lRst-j ing for a half hour, the d^or? | were closed and the meeting was I thrown open ijr the relation of individual Christian experience, The chairman led in this particular and was followed by a large! number of the brethren. With j many there was an undertone of i trial and allliction, but the note' of victory rang clear and strong like the bugle blast which calls the soldier the to a more impetuous charge. The tremulous words of an aged superanuate would be followed by the full, strong tones of a youthful soldier of the cross; the one looking back over the paid and thanking God for the victories already won, the other looking forward to the future and nerving himself for the conflicts which await him. At 11 :10 Bishop Hargrove took charge of the service. The organist was considerate aud selected tunes which were perfect ly familiar, and a tidal wave of sacred song was soon rolling through the spacious auditorium, the text was announced from St. iTohu 1:29. Upon this text the bishop placed one point ot the compass and with the other he swept the wide area of truth con tained in this chapter. The eer mon consisted of an exposition of the entire chapter. Christ is revealed as eternal, incomprehensible, the Creator, the source of life and of light. Rites and cere monies avail nothing toward the salvation of the soul. The Holy Spirit is the only available power and His power is available to every one who will have it. John points to Christ as the only hope of Salvation. Two of his disciples immediately followed Christ and He turned to meet them. He always meets the seeking sinner. Andrew and John were transformed into workere. "Come and aaa" is the demand of a true philosopher. At the conclusion of the ser vice Bishop Hargrove ordained the deacons, traveling and local, who have been elected to orders this week. Senators Davis and Clear will bring the sitting to a close. Senator Allison will make the an nounceinent in thecase of his late colleague, Senator Gear, and there is hope that Senator Nelson may arrive in time to perform similar service concerning Senator Davis. These announcements will be preceded by the ceremony of :u swearing in new members, who, this year, are Mr. Dolliver, who m has been appointed to succeed ni Senator Gear, and Mr. Dilling- ti< ham, who takes the place former- R ly occupied by Senator Ross, of fj Vermont, and the appointment r? of the usual committees to wait ^ upon the President and the House of Representatives. Senator Frye expects to got up the shipping subsidy bill on Tuesday, and if not on that day then on Wednesday, and in do- T ing this to have the Spoonor I) Philippines bill displaced. This p business will be the beginning ot ^ the important work of the the session, and upon the success or failure of the scheme may depend much of the futnro course of proceedings of the entire session. Senator Frye said today that ho already had conferred with a majority of the members of that committee, and ' that ho folt assured he would ^ have no difficulty in obtaining g their assent, to the proposed d change. Thus far there has been u no consultation with Democratic (1 senators, but tho friends of the shipping bill do not look for factious opposition to taking up the bill from that source. A motion |( to take up a measure is not de- , batable under tho Sen\to rules, 1 and they are confident of a ma-1 r jority 011 a vote ??f n roll-call '' snould be demanded, It is probable that a friendly arrangemaut will be made with Senator Morgan, who has tho Nicaraguan bill in charge, that bill being on the calendar as the special order for n the 10th inst. I There is some talk of an effort . during the week to got up the Hay-Pauncefote treaty in executive session, but there is as yet no definite programme to this end. A movement is on foot now 1( to secure the assent of the corn- njittee on foreign relations to the B abandonment of the Davis amendment to the treaty for the I fortification of the proposed t. canal. ' The usual custom of adjourning over from Thursdav until the following Monday during the ifirst weeks of the session will 1 probably bo departed from this session.
