The house which they occupied
stood within 150 feet of the roadside.
Near it was a small building
which they used as a kitchen,
and in which they kept their
stores. People passing along the
road this morning noticed that
the small house had been burned.
There was no sign of life about
the place, and and investigation
shewed that the dwelling had
beeu ransacked from top to bottom,
indicating that a most
thorough search had been made
for the money which the old
ladies were supposed to have
kept in the house. Bureaus, cab
inets and desks had been opened
and their contents strewn about.
Every nook and corner of the
dwelling bore evidences of hav
ing been searched. The general 1
surroundings and the absence of
of the old couple pointed all too
plainly to a case of murder, rob- 1
hery and arson. It whs no surprise
when a search of the ashes
of the small building revealed
two burned stumps, the bodies of
Miss Colley and her niece.
The supposition is that the old

Aii Echo From the Recent
Georgetown Riot.
The Florence Times had yesterday
the following interesting
special from Georgetown :
Georgetown, fNov. 21?This
community has beer, excited recently
a second time on account of
spread of h report that. J. L.
Mitchell, the negro la*} or had
sought to lucite the negroes to
another riot in the interest of
Browntield, the man on whose
ULV/U U II L VIH7 IC?A .It liwi ? HP .*-.1(11 I
ed. It in said that Mitchell
preached a red hot sermon at the
colored church on Sunday night,
in which he declared that Browntieid
should never hang, that his
trial had not been fair, and that
ho had gotton the negroes very
much wrought up
The negroes who attended the
church were talking about the
sermon, and iu that way the sub
stauce of it had reached the
white people.
Mitchell on being aekttd about
it by the reporter ol the Times
said that ho had said nothing in
cendiary, but that at the request
of the wife of Brownfield lie
stated the case and the grounds
of appeal that he proposed, as
Brownfield's lawyer, to make to
the supreme court. He might
have said that the negro would
not hang, but not in the way it
was interpreted. The woman is
trying to raise money for the
purpose of carrying the case to
the supreme court.
It is understood that one of the
grounds of appeal will be that
the jury which hoard tho case
was composed of white men altogether,
and it is Mitchell's idea
to get some negroes on it.
