Enterprise.
A new telephone line lias been
completed from Monroe to Lancaster.
There seems to be an epidemic

Mr. Edwin Nosbit attended a
reception at Mr. E. D. Tillman's,
at Van Wyck last Wednesday
night.
Two negroes, Mose Hood and
Jim Stitt, got into a difficulty at
Potter last Friday, and Hood shot
Stitt through the thigh.
Dr. W. O. Nisbet, of Charlotte,
is spending a few days with his
friends here, and shooting birds.
Dr. J. D. Nisbet,of N. Y. city,
is visiting his relatives and
many friends here and in this
vicinity.
The two infant children of
Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Cheers
died last Sunday niglit and were
buried at Tirzah Presbyterian
church on Monday.
Mr. Ed. J. McCain, son of
Mr. J. S. McCain, of this township,
married Wednesday
evening to Miss Nannie Green,
of Due West, S. C.
Ed. Bivens, a negro living
near Marshville, was shot by
his wife for whipping one of his
children. The wound was of a
serious nature.
Miss Edna Stewart, a popular
milliner of Monroe, died last
week. Her remains were carried
back to her home in Maryland
for burial.
There came near being a race
riot at the Wilson's old store
precinct. Several negroes with
drawn pistols tried to take
charge of the ballot boxes. A
few white men of grit ran them
off. Bloodshed was barely averted.
It was quite fortunate for
them that they got off as lightly
as they did.
On Thursday, November 15,
Mr. B. C. Ashcraft, the popular
and talented editor of The Monroe
Enquirer, will bo married
to Miss Mary Blair, one of the
most beautiful and accomplished
ladies of that city. The marriage
will take place at the residence
of the bride's mother.
Rev. J. W. Little was in town
shaKing hands with his many |
friends last Tuesday. We are
pleased to announce that lie.
will preach in the Methodist
church here at half past 3
o'clock noxt Sunday afternoon.
On Monday he will go to Monroe
to visit Elhanan Institute,
the well-known missionary

The young child of Mr. W. T.
Broom, near here, died last
Sunday from the effects of a
scald by pulling a kettle of hot
water over on itself. It was
buried at the McCorkle grave
yard on Monday funeral Hervices
conducted by Rev. M. T.
Steele, of the Methodist church.
We have heard that some
Northern capitalists have been
prospecting with a view to purchasing
the Howie mine property
near this place. Those
who claim to be in a position to
know say that this is one of the
richest and most, valuable gold
mines In this portion of the
State. Its development would
doubtless prove quite an advantage
to our town and comaaunity,
