The fair was a big success, t
the exhibits being better than
usual and the attendance un- <
procedented.
Preliminary steps are being j
taken by the second Baptist ,
church here to build a house of I
worship. They are badly in
need of it now, and with a grow- 1
ing membership it will soon be
a necessity in order to accommodate
the already crowded
congregations. The paster,
Rev. S. N. Watson, under whose
charge the church has made
material and substantial progross,
and a committee of the
membership are sending out
appeals for aid in this work,
and all who feel constrained to
make them a contribution will
be aiding in a much needed
work. They have a desirable
lot and some money, but not
enough to build such a house
as they need.
50,000 Took Street Cars In Col
uiiibia Yesterday.
The highest expectations of the
electric railway management have
been surpassed by the realization.
The greatest previous record for
one day was on Thursday of fair
week last year before the line had
been fully equipped and svstemized
in management. On that
day lfi,000 people wore transported.
At the beginning of this
week Manager Clark calculated i
that ho would handle on Thursday
(yesterday), the biggest day
of the fair, about 30,000 people,
lie actually exceeded this total
on Wednesday, when 3G,000
people were transported. Yes ,
terday's business was so much
greater than Wednesday's that
it is believed the reports today
will show that 50,000 people ,

tho company. This is an aston
lshing total reaching nearly twice
the population of the city and
suburbs. Recognition is due to (
the management for its admirable
arrangements which contributed
much to the convenience and the ;
pleasure of the public. The cars
were most intelligently apportioned
on the different lines and
at different hours and the only j
interruption of their efficient service
was caused by the fall of a
trolley wire about 10 a. m. and j
the stopping of the cars an hour
later to permit the unobstructed
passage along Main street of the
military parade. This concession .
to the soldiers interfered with the
schedules for a time, but after all
the cars did nearly the maximum
business possible to them. On
one car a representative of The
State noticed 102 cash fares rung .
up between the fair ground and i
the postoflice. ^
Without this fine electric ser- :
vice it would have been impos- i
< sible to have handled such a ?i
crowd as was congested in Col i
umbia yesterday. Yet so great
was the number of people in the j
city that the hackrnen were not
deprived of the heavy revenues (
they U9ed to receive. They say ,
that they had as much as they ^
could do, and they did not hesitate
to charge all that a customer
could he made to pay. The bus (

Journey iu Europe.
The Rev. Dr. T. DeWitt Tallage,
editor of The Christian
Herald, arrived in New York
Wednesday on the Oceanic, alter
jix months of constant travel in
Europe.
When seen at his hotel in New
York, Dr. Talniage was asked if
Europeans evince unusual interest
in the present contest be
ween Bryan ami McKinley.
"In England, yes," replied the
loetor, "and Britisheis will be
nore than ever interested, now
hat their own fierce political
campaign is over. The contrast
)etween a campaign here and a
ampaign in England, is the conrast
between order and chaos,
between good nature and surli
less. The contest just finished
lotweeu candidates for seats in
parliament, was a most widely
>xciting event. The best men in
England were engaged in it. But
it nearly all the public meetings
he candidates, no matter which
iide they represented, were hoot
3d and jeered at, and in some
sases driven from the platform.
Fhe attack on Roosevelt in Colo
rado was a more detail compared
:o the venomous words that were
lung at the speakers, and the
iisorder and violent breaking up
d meetings in England. Men
like Lord (roorgo Hamilton were
sailed liars and cowards in open
meeting, and were forcibly prorented
from finishing their
ipeeches. The night I left Liverpool
(or Ireland, eight political
meetings were reported at nol
one of which could the speakers
get the ears of their howling,
scofling audiences. Every speaker
that night was compelled to be
content with delivering his
speech simply to the newspaper
press. Now in America each
party gives the speaker of the
opposing party a chance. If an
American voter does not like the
opposition platform he stays
tjuiotly away from the meetings,
and hence the orderly, good
naturod audiences common to our
political gatherings.

I found that tho people are more
content there than they have
been for many years. The queen's
visit accomplished a wondrous
amount of good. There will be no
open disaffoction among tho Irish
for a long time to come, at least
not on the old political grounds.
