The total taxable property of
Lancaster county is : Railroad,
$238,850; reality, $1,200,053;
personal, 689,635; total, $2,128,538.
The total, for the
entire State, is?$183,030,613.
Wheat on Old Land.
Whether or not wheat will
bring $1 or $1.50 a bushel before
the close of the year, a
Maryland farmer has demonstrated
that wheat can bo grown
with profit in the older sections
of the country against the competition
of tho West Maryland
is one of the longest-settled portions
of the United States, and
its Charles county has been
under cultiv.-ttion longer than
many counties in tho State. It
has, moreover, been cultivated
with crops?tobacco and corn?
which, under old conditions,
tended to deplete the soil. From
sixty-four acres of this former
tabacoo and corn land the Maryland
farmer threshed in June of
this year 1300 bushels. One
field of twenty-seven acres averaged
thirty bushels to the acre.
His wheat was sold at early
July prices for a little moro
than $900. it cost him $250
for fertilizers, etc., to make the
crop, not counting his own
labor, which included threshing
with his own machine. Not
without considerable work lias
he brought the land to such a
condition. For several years he
haa grazed Cuttle And SiiOGp on
the farm, which themselves
bring him a few dollars now
and then, and he has also given
the soil cowpea-vine treatment.
The experience is worth recording
as encouraging to other farmers,
and as indicating that the
so-called wornout soils of the
Atlantic seaboard are not beyond
redemption.

Ten cent cotton is a profitable
crop, no doubt; but, there are
others. Four hundred pounds of
cotton per acre is far above the
average, and at that yield the
crop on an acre, at 10 cents a
pound, is worth $40.
The Mullins Enterprise reports,
however, that. Mr. VV. H. Daniels,
a Marion county farmer, has made
this year $1,185 on five acres of
tobacco, or an average of $237
per acre.
This is the equivalent, in value,
as appears from a single caleula

cotton, yielding 400 pounds per
acre, or of six acreB of 10 cent
cotton yielding at the same rate.
So that it is evident that there
are other crops that can be grown
and are grown in South Carolina
that compare very favorably with
dime cotton.
Some of the cotton farmers in
Marion and other counties may
learn something to their advantage
from Mr. Daniel's pleasing
