More than half the cotton
crop has been sold, and not less
than three-fourths of it gathered.
Fair prices have been paid
lor the cotton sold But better
prices could have been obtained
.by the producers if they had all
held their cotton, until the
necessity of the manufacturers,
forcod them to buy from the
producer, at prices fixed by
the producers; just as the
farmers are forced to buy "supplies"
at prices fixed by the
sellers?i. e. merchants. But
it is too late to discuss this
question now, since the greater
part of the cotton has been sold.
We had better discuss the question
of our future interests.
There is danger of present high
prices stimulating the increase
of production until prices will
be reduced one-half, and the
cost of production exceed the
receipts from sales of the product.
We should raise our own
supplies, and in view of the

of feeling in the cotton trad?
nml the market has declined
materially. By far the mos!
important features of the week
was the bereau report. This wnsensational
surprise. Instead
of the extremely small percentage
expected the govornnion!
estimated the condition of tin
crop at the conservatively lihei
al figure of (>/ per cent., fulh
5 per cent, better than even tin
bears had hoped. The an
nounceinent of the report w;iimmediately
followed by a general
selling movement, wliieli
has continued since, and wliied
resulted in a net decline f? :
snort corn crop of this year, \vc
should sow heavy of grain, especially
wheat, as it seldom
fails if sown in due season, and
property ' fertilized. Oats, if
sown early, will come in good
time, to feed stock, and save
farmers from increased debt for
farm supplies, and the better
enable the farmers to hold their
cotton (if necessary) for remuneration
prices. Draining and
hillside ditches should receive
attention, after grain is sown.

Judge Klugh presiding. The

Paul Duncan, house breaking
and larceny ; verdict guilty ;
sentence, six months in penitentiary
or on chain gang
Henry Magill, burglary and
larceny, not guilty. True bills
have been found in the following
cases : Elliott Thomas, larceny
; P. T. Cauthen, larceny;
Hen (lent, disposing of property
under lien ; John Watts, murder
; Wood Elliott, disturbing
religious meeting; C. C Horton,
Sr., assault and battery
and resisting officer; Thomas
Catoe, assault and battery, witli
intent to kill ; Robt. Crockett,
larceny. No bill was found in
case of Lum Ware, charged
with larceny. The case of Ceo.
Eubanks, charged with murder,
is set for trial today. The following
