Gust&y Eckstein Is Trying to Solve
the Mystery. A Very Queer
Problem.

Eckstein, a New York represen- .

what has become of $5,000 which
he claims was in an envelope
sent by express marked $5,000
but said to have contained double
that sum, when it was dispatched.
On being opened at its destina
tion only $5,000, it is declared,
was forthcoming.
One day last week Mr. Eckstein
wont to the Central National
bank, where he is a depositor,
and drew a check for $10,000, 1
asking the cashier, Mr. Young, 1
lor bills of large denomination,
lie was given nino $1,000 bills
and two $500 bills. Then he j
asked the cashier to have them
put in a large envelope as he 1
wanted to send the money by express.
This was done and the par
eel was handed to him. .
Then, according to the story
told by the cashier, the cotton
merchant took a pen and marked '
the ovelepe kt$5^000." That done, (
ho returned it to the cashier and
requested him to forward it to I

forward it to Savannah, along
with the rest of the hank business.
The envelope was directed to 1
Eckstein's brother, who is at the
head of the Savaunah house. Mr.
Voting took it and Mr. Eckstein
left the banK.
At the close of business Eckstein's
package, marked $5,000, M
was taken to the office ot the 1

messenger of the banK. A receipt <
was issued for it as marked and (

gram from his brother in Savannah
saying that the envelope had
been roceived but it contained

Second Murder this Month.
Greenville, Oct. 10.?Greenville
scores the second murder I
this month. Negroes had hot!
supper and dance four miles
from the city last night. Plenty
of whiskey was on hand, and
Ed. Simmons and Steve Ray,
both drunk, got into a dispute
about a woman about midnight.
Simmons had a pistol, and proceeded
to settle the dispute by
shooting Ray. They wore a few
feet apart and the bullet entered
Ray's breast above the heart,
killing him instantly. The
coroner was notified of the killing
to day. An open knife was
found at Ray's side this morning,
and Simmons will put up

Homicide in Greenwood.
Saluda, Oct. 0.?The meagre
details of a homicide on Sunday
night, just across the Saluda
like, in Greenwood county, were
received here yesterday evening.
It appears that J. L. Ouzts,
white, on his return home after
dark found two negroes engaged
in a fisticuff in his yard. He
endeavored to stop the row and
became involved himself. Going
for his gun he returned and

but could not got far enough
away from him to draw a head.
Finally he changed ends of the
weapon and struck the negro
across the head, breaking ofl\
the stock. By this time, the
dory goes, the other negro then
dosed in on him and received
what virtue there was in the
barrel across his head. His
skull was crushed and death
