Murdered the Palmist with Whom
He Traveled.
Columbia, Pa., Oct. 8.?William
Mott of Norfolk, Va, this

traveling about the country, and
< angerously wounded Elizabeth
Steinbaner, with whom the cou
I le boarded here. Mile. Alberta,
whose real name was Anna Fur
lung, was 37 years old. Mott is
139. iler home is in Chieago.
Mott says she has a husband, a
l otel man and 6011, named Bren
man, living at Bayoune, iN. J.
Mott met her a year ago at Dover,
Del. They have been travelling
from place to place and for the
past couple of months have had
palmistry offices in Lancaster and
Columbia. l ately Mott has be
come very jealous of the woman
and this evening, after drinking
all day, went to their room and
nad an altercation with her. Mrs.
Stinbaner attempted to pacify
then, whereupon Mott began to
lire from a 32 calibre revolver.
Mrs. Steinhaner fell to the floor
with a bullet in her stomach and
another in her head, and Mile.
Albertawas shot three times in the
tiAnrt iinrl Klin Hicwl in
stantly. Mrs. Steinbaner was
taken to a hospital. Mott surrendered
and talked coolly of the
murder, regretting that he had
shot Mrs. Steinbaner, whom he
said he liked, and saying that he
had become tired of Mile Alberta's
fickleness and could stand
it no longer.

dispelled all fears of a lynching.
To Pay Private Losses.
Cape Town, Oct. 8.?The Cape
house of assembly today passed

No News of Captives.
Manila, Oct. 5.- The report of
the capture of about 60 men of
tne Twenty ninth United States
infantry on Marinduque island is
confirmed through communica
tion from MacArthur and
Kempli from Marinduque island,
but details are lacking. The
Vorktown's relief column landed
at Torrijos on the Marinduque
cost ai d marched to Santa Cruz,
which was the proposed route of
captured party, without enooun
tering I he enemy or learning anything
definite regarding the captives
except that they had entirely
disappeared.

Fire Chiefs In Charleston.
Charleston, (Jet. 8.-Nearly '100
fire chiefs with their wives and
(laughters are in the city tonight.
Tomorrow the convention of the
international association of fire
engineers will assemble. Among
the parties already arrived was
the "Fireman's Herald" party
from New York, which arrived at
8:55 a. m., 102 strong, having
made the 780 miles in '20 hours.

Ilurry S. Knappen, a newspaper
man, returned today from a per
ilous trip to the Hudson liny
country in which, with nine white
men and eight Indians, he sailed
GOO miles up the east Rhoro of
that great inland sea. Mr. Knappen
was assured by those whom
he met that a uskyboat,> had
come into the region on the extreme
northeast shore ot the bay
two years before, that it came to
ground and that the Ravages who
inhabit that country had killed
the white men in it. This he be
lieves was Andree's Polar expe
dition.

Berlin, Oct. 8.?The somewhat
optomistic view of the
Chinese situation which ore
vailed in Germany last weekhas
been unfavorably affected
by the reports that the Chinese
court has resolved to settle permanently
at Si Ngan Fu province
of Shesi. This the Berliner
Tageblatt regards as ''indisputable
evidence that the
Chinese court is as anti-foreign
as ever."
"The failure of the court to
return to Pekin." it says,
"makes a farce of the proposed
peace negotiations, inasmuch as
the Chinese government could
annul the whole proceedure at
any moment by revoking the
credeutails of Prince Citing and
Li Ilung Chang." Without
claiming any official authority
for its attitude the Tageblatt
comments favorably upon a
proposal to declare Emperor
TCwang Su deposed.
FLAGLER BECOMES A

Henry M. Flagler, the Now
York millionare hotel ami railroad
magnate, arrived 111 Florida
from the east today and formally
announced his citizenship
in Florida by registering
to vote in the coming election,
lie is building a cottage at
Palm Beach and registered in
the West Palm Beach precinct
of Dado county.
Mr. Flagler announced some
months ago that he would move
his citizenship from New York
to this State. lie will tomorrow
begin a tour of inspection
of his railroad and hotel interests
in Florida.

WILL REBUILD THE MAIN.
New York, Oct. ft.?The North
German Lloyd steamship Main
is to be rebuilt by I lie Newport
News Shipbuilding company and
will be towed to that place from
the Erie Basin tomorrow morning.
The rebuilding will cost
over $000,000. Two of the sup
er structure decks have been re
moved and mo vessel noats very
high in the water. She will
carry with her the shells of 30 or
40 metallic lifeboats that were
destroyed in the fire. These
will bo dumped overboard an soon
an she gets outside. All the
anchors, ventilators, pulleys and
other material of value have been
taken from the burnt ship and
sent to Germany on the Bremen.
Collision in Germany.
