Sea island cotton improved slightly and in Beaufort county will yield an average crop. Blight continues in the Charleston districts. In Georgia the lact of rain during the week has boon most conducive to the picking of cotton, which is monopolizing the time of all who have not finished this branch of work. In many fields the cotton has all been picked out while in others about half the a n rvl a % a /J ? ~ - oiapic jo ^mucicu mm iiiucii hum been placed on the market. Owing to the advanced stage of this crop no change in the condition of it resulted from the recent rains except in a few counties where it was more or less damaged by rot or sprouting. It is not thought this damage amounted to very much, as no further mention is made of it this week. In Florida the high temperatures stimulated cotton in open ing, and the absence of general rains was favorable for picking which has been carried on actively over all sections of the state. The greater portion of the cotton crop is open, and, in many sections, the bulk of the crop has been picked. The top crop will amount to vary little, except on lowlands, where the conditions are more favorable than on uplands. In Alabama cotton continues to open rapidly and prematurely, and picking, ginning and marketing aro progressing about as rapidly as this staple opens, though scarcity of labor is retard ing this work in a few sections; it continues to yield slightly, with no top crop worthy of considera tion ; it is now estimated that the bulk of the crop will be picked in a week or ten days. In Mississippi tho fore part of tho week wan cool, being favorable for cotton picking, the rains of the latter part retarded picking for a few days. The rain came too late to improve the condition of cotton and in many sections was very damaging to that which was open. Cotton is opening fast and picking is being rushed. The yield is very light. In Louisiana cotton picking is well advanced in all sections and, as in many localities the plant has stopped growing and fruiting, iNCAS "" LA PICKING OUT THE FLEECY STAPLE. Rapid Progress In Gathering the Cotton Crop?Its Smallness Demonstrated. The reports for the week relate principally the progress that is being made in gathering the crop, which has been rapid under ex t^emely favorable weather conditions, except in uorthern Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma where heavy rains somewhat retarded the work, and damaged open cot ton. It does not appear that any considerable amount of lands were inundated and the current reports are largely exaggerations. It appears that in many sections the bulk of the crop has been picked, and that, by reason of there being so poor a prospect for a top crop, picking will be finished much sooner than usual. Naturally there is no improvement noted in the condition of cotton, nor is there deterioration but the progress of picking demonstrates the smabness of the current crop, especially in the Atlantic States. In North Carolina picking cot ton made fairly good headway during the week under the favor able weather conditions. In many counties the crop is now all open, and over three fourths gathered. Some correspondents express the opinion that all the cotton will be picked by the middle of October. All previous reports of a very short crop have been confirmed. In South Carolina cotton is nearly all open and picking made rapid progress to the extent that from some fields all has been gathered. In Tennessee cotton is proving to be a very short crop, from effects of rust and drought; it is opening rapidly and picking is in full progress. General showers prevailed throughout the week after the 20th with heavy local rains on the 21st and 22d. The greatest local rainfall for the week was 7.15 inches at Weath erford. Cotton picking was rush ed during the early part of the week, but very little was gathered during the latter part on account of the continued wet weather, except in south portion. Mech cotton blown out by the high winds and damaged by the heavy rains on the 21st and 22d. Worms are reported generally and some report that the plant has been stripped of all its leaves. Dry weather is badly needed for picking, especially over the central and northern portions of the state. Pickers are scarce in some localities. OoUon is turning out very well in some sections, but the crop is very spotted and generally below an average. The crop is generally late and an early frost is feared. In Arkansas there were general heavy rains during the week which retarded cotton picking. This work is general and under favorable weather conditions, most, nf (ho orftn will ha (ralh?i.?/l w.
