Sayers tonight wired the following
statement to the associated
press :
-t'The situation tonight in all
parts of the stricken district, so
far as known to me, is improved,
and will, I believe, should we
have fair weather, continue to
improve. The method of distributing
the benefactions of the people
has become systematized and
has been reduced to the lowest
expenses possible, and in this I
have had the hearty and volun
tary assistance of the railway,
express, telegraph and telephone
J companies, all of whom have
promptly and without charge
transmitted supplies and mes
sages, besides contributing to the
relief of the sufferers. Galveston
is being managed by its own
municipal authorities supplemented
by the assistance of committees
composed of its best citizens
and also by the aid of Gen.
Scurry. I am also informed that
the United States marshal, Dr.
Grant, has rendered and is render
ing most valuable aid.
"The loss of life occasioned by

not he less than 12,000 lives,
while the loss of property will
probably aggregate $20,000,000.
Not withstanding this severe af
lliction, I have every confidence
that the stricken districts will

James It. Howard Watt Found
Guilty and Death Sentence
Fixed by Jury.
Frankfort, Ky., Sept. 26.?
.James It. Howard, who has lieen
on trial for the past ten days,
charged with being a principal
in the assassination of Wm. Uoe- j
bel, found guilty today, the jury
fixing his punishment at death.
The fact that the jury had de
liberated all of yesterday after- i
noon without reaching a verdict
led to the belief that it was hope
lessly divided, and this fact
made the verdict a shock to
Howard and those who hoped for
his ultimate acquittal.
Howard did not lose his com- j
posure when the verdict calling
for the extreme penalty of the
law was read in the crowded
court room. He glanced at his
attorneys, who sat beside him,
and smiled and said nothing.
