Death ot Jackson's Surgeon. 8

Richmond, Va,, Sept. 19.?Dr. .
Hunter McGuire, the chief sur- !
geon on Stonewall Jackson's staff,
and one of the best known surgeons
in the country, died here r
this morning at 10 o'clock. This 8
eminent surgeon was stricken
with paralysis about six months
ago and never recovered Dr. 1
McGuire entered the Confederate '
army as a private soldier, enter
ing a regiment in Jackson's brig- "
ade. lie was soon assigned a 8
place on the medical stsff. * A ;
short time later he was made the 1
head of the medical department 8
of Gen Jackson's army and was
present with that officer when he 1
received his fatal wound, near r
Guinea Station. lie performed !
ihe operation made necessary 1
thereby. Just before the out- 8
break of the war he was a stu- 8
dent at the Jefferson Medical col- '
lege, Philadelphia, but as soon as
it was recognized there was to be J
war he left for Virginia. Upon n
his arrival here, with a number e
of other strdents, McGuire was
given a cordial reception by the a
local authorities.
Dr. Hunter McGuire was one ?
of the most eminent surgeons in ^
the South. He headed the move w
ment which brought from Phil
udelphia to Richmond some 300
Southern medical students during
the excitement incident to the
John Rrown raid ; had filled the
chair of surgery in the Medical
College of Virginia and founded 0
the University College of Med *
icine here. He was the author ?
of several important medical ^
works, had served in leading a
positions in medical and surgical r
organizations ot the country and p
was chairman of the history com- C
mittee of the Grand Camp of Vir- S
ginia, Confederate veterans.

Paris, Sept. 22.?A banquet
of the Mayors of France began
at 11 o'clock this morning. The
feast was on a brobdignanian
scale, twenty-two functionaries
sitting down at one time. A
full mile of tables was arranged
four abreast and divided into
furlong sections. They occupied
nearly the whole of the Tulleries
gardens, which were covered
by gigantic tents. There
were six great groups of waiters
each of five hundred, and twelve
