King Humbert, of Italy, was
assassinated Sunday by an Italian
anarchist at Monza, in Italy. He
was shot three times and died
before they conld get him to the
palace. The assassin was arrested.

The Congressional Race.
Mr. Editor:?1 notice a elate
raent from the correspondent of
Yorkville, to the "News and Courier,"
to the effect that "Finley
will carry every county in the
district "even to Lancaster {county)"
Strait's adopted county.
How any man with a smattering
knowledge of the past and present,
can sum up the courage, and
put on the face to make such a
declaration, is beyond my comprehension,
especially in the face
of the fact that Strait at his first
election headed the procession, in
his own (Lancaster) county,
leading even the "Immortal Ben",
with the results ever since as
may be seen by relerence to the
returns. To be sure the wish was
"father" to the expression. I
write with something more substantial
than a vague wish to
guide me in the prediction that
"Strait" will sweep the district
"like a cyclone". The conditions
which contributed largely to bis
defeat in the last "Congressional
Kace" do not exist to day, especially
the "Our Johnny" incident.
The veil that then blinded the
eye a of McLaurin's devotees has
been torn asunder by bis own
precious hands, and his admirers
of a lew years ago, curse him toduy.
Was Strait right ? The facts
speak for themselves. I have
also been in Kershaw and Ches
terfield counties, and am fully
convinced that Strait's majority
in both these counties will be
v much larger than ever before
As to Lancaster, "election day"
will record the grandest majority
ever accorded any man in this
congressional district.

News Items from Factory Hill.
Factory Hill, July 80, 1900.?
The health of our community
in good at this time.
The recent good rains have
brought the gardens out and they
are improving very last also every
person seems to be in a good
humor.
Mr. Thos. Snipes, it is thought,
will make about 700 bushels of
corn on the Billings plantation.
Messrs. Reese Roberts and Miller
Knight have moved to the
factory from Rock Hill with their
families.
The brick mill makes sixty
brick to the minute and is in successful
operation every day except
Sunday. The new boiler for
the second brick mill has arrived.
The meeting conducted by Rev.
8. N. Watson resulted in great
good for the community. He
preached faithful sermons and
was listened to with deep interest

The Meeting of the State Alliance.

We attended the meeting of !
the State Alliance as noticed in
Saturday's Entkrprisk. Maj I}.
F. Miller went down on Tuesday,
the 24th, to attend the meeting
of the Trustee stockholders of the
State Exchange The writer went
down on the 25t'h, Wednesday.
When we arrived in company
with Bros. Wilburn and Ash of
York, the Trustee stockholders
were discussing the question as
to whether or not the State Exchange
should be desolved and
the money returned to the original
contributors. Lancaster was

change and Bro. Miller led the
fight on that side and we won
the victory. The Exchange still
lives and we hope to continue to
buy our fertilizers and bagging
and ties through that channel as 1
heretofore. Lancaster has been ,
using the Exchange and knows i
its value. Those who were anxious
to have the Exchange discontinued
were from counties
that have not used the Exchange v

enough to know its value. The o
State Alliance had a very inter
esting meeting. The old officers
were re elected. A good deal ot
enthusiasm was manifested over }
the fact that the Exchange is 1
to be continued. j

Recruits Gathering.

Francisco is now a point of concentration
for the troops gathered
together from all ovei tlie
United States for duty in the
orient. At military headquarters
everybody is working under
pressure.
Battery D of tho Third heavy
artillery has arrived and encamped
with batteries A, 1 and
O, bringing the battalion to its
full strongth. The batteries will
sail with tho Fourth cavalry on
the Hancock July Jo for China.
Troop II of the Ninth cavalry
has arrived. This completes
the concentration of the regiment
here. The three companies
A, C and I), Eighth infantry,
which are just back from
^ Manila, will remain at the Presidio
and may not go to Montana
as was expected.
Recruits are coming at the
i rate of 75 a day from all parts
* of the United States. There has
been no difficulty in obtaining
all the volunteers needed.
