The cotton mill at this place,
now operating about four hundred
and seventy-five looms, is
now and has l>een doing a good
work, making good profits.
The work of enlarging the
same to the capacity of a million
dollar mill is now about to
commence. Brick making lias
already begun.
The contract for four million
bricks has been let to a Mr. Tanner,
of Charlotte, the contract
to be completed 011 or before the
1st day of December. Two or
more machines for making the
brick will be in full operation
in a few days, and a large force
of hands are now being eraployed
in the work. The construction
of the enlarged plallt
will be pushed forward with
great rapidty. The present
mill will be continued in operation,
without hindrance, during
the work 011 the increase mill
piant, wmcn win tie located on
the same ground, separated
from the present building only
by a street running between.
The new mill will be operated
by electricity, generated at
Landsford, on the Catawba
River, about eight miles distant.
The plant for generating the
electricity and the water dam
will be constructed at once at
Landsford, on the Catawba, by
another company, which is al
ready at work.
The money lias already been
secured, and Lancaster will soon
become one of the leading factory
towns in thi9 part of the
state. Col. Leroy Springs is a
hustler, with the capital at his
back. He is leading in this
great enterprise, and his untiring
energy and conspicuous personality
