REQUISITION.
Wot. Mount of Indiana Won't
Give Taylor Orer.
Indianapolis, Ind., June 31.
?Gov. Mount has refused to
lionor the requisition of Gov.
Beckham of Kentucky for the
return of W. S. Taylor.
Col. Tom Campbell, Justus
Gobel, brother of the murdered
man, and Sheriff Suter of
Franklin county, Ky., arrived
here this afternoon with the
requisition. Col. Campbell in*
sisted to the governor that he
had been misinformed as to the
situation in Kentucky.
Mr. Campbell said Taylor
could got a fair trial in Kentucky
and cited the fact that
seven others charged with the
same crime had not been molested.
Justus Goebel added to
Mr. Campbell's argument,which
lasted an hour, a short statement
. urging the governor to
have the law take its course.
Gov. Mount asked for the papers
which included copies of
the evidence and said he would
consider the matter.
At 10 o'clock tonight Governor
Mount announced his decision
in a statement refusing
to honor the requisition.
The statement says: "I de
plore the assassination of the
late Wm. Goebel and would not
for a moment refuse to return
Mr. Taylor or any other man
charged with complicity in that
crime, if I could persuade myself
that the party so charged,
under existing conditions,would
he accorded a fair trial.
"I do not believe a fair and
impartial trial can or will at
this time he given Mr. Taylor.
When Judge Cantrill, of the
trial court of Frankfort, declares
that he would not subject
a sheepkilling dog to a trial
under such circumstances as
exist, may I not justly refuse to
send Mr. Taylor back to be subjected
to a trial, with prejudice
intensified and fanned into hate?
