Mattie Hughes, who has been
tried three times for the murder
of her husband and has two or
three indictments against her
for selling liquor, absconded today.
She said she was going to
New York or some other point,
but it is not known where, Iler
stock of goods, worth about
$100, is mortgaged for $540.
She is under bond for trial for
$1,000;
Wreck of an Editorial Train.
Asheville, NJ C , June 14.?
The north-bound vestibule on
the Southern Railway, which
left here at 5.10 this morning
was wrecked four miles south of
here. The train consisted of
eight co.'iches and two engines.
Both engiues left the track and
rolled down an embankment
taking two coaches with them.
The engines were completely
wrecked. The colored fireman
was fatally hu.t and the baggage
man and the engineer badly
bruised The Tennessee Ed
uoriai Association was on board,
but none of the editors was
injured beyond a severe shaking
up.

requests from wives of officers 1
serving in the Phillippines to
join their husbands, the Secretary
of War has decided that the
wives of the officers stationed in
the Philippines can go on the
Govrnment transports when 1
there is room for them by getting
permission from the quartermaster
generrl of the army,
hut that owing to the fact that
officers of volunteer regiments
will soon he returned to this j
country by expiration of the
term of service, the wives of
these officers will not he permitted
to go to the Philippines ,
on the Government trahsports.

Death ot Mrs. Gladstone.
London, June 14?Mrs. Gladstone,
wife of William E. Glad (

Gladstone, who had been uncon j
scions for about 72 hours, died
without recovering consciousness.
In the course of the evening
William Gladstone, heir to Ha
warden, arrived from Eton,
shoitly followed by two sisters
from London. The bells of Ha
warden church rang mutllled
peals.

the funeral will be held in the
Abbey. The interment will prob

was the commander in chief, and

by the court to have been infe
rior to the American force and
the bounty of $100, therefore, is
awarded for every officer and man
