It is with a teeluig of pain and regret that we have to speak of the act of lawlessness which happened in the heart of the towu on Saturday night last. At about the hour of 12 o'clock, a party of men went to the house of Eliza Mobley?commonly called Eliza Lowry?living in an out house on the premises of Mrs. Mollie M. Perry, aud after presenting a pistol at the head of (Jrider Mobley, her husband, pulled her from her bed. After being nearly stripped of clothing sho was gagged and carried near to the track of the S. C. G. Ext. railroad, where she was beat and terribly bruised and shot through the face. After shooting her down the parties tied. Those who were drawn to the scene by the cries of the woman were met by a horrible spectacle?a half clad negro covered with blood, making her way with difficulty, back to her house. Deputy Sheriff Wilson soon reached the place with his blood hounds, and eu deavored to get the track of the parties, but was unsuccessful. Dr. Poor attended the woman and says, whilst in a critical con dition, probability a are she will get well. The most dangerous wound is from a pistol. The ball entered near the ear in one side of the face and came out hnder the eve, near the nose on the op posite side of the face. She in a ruthless creature and got no more perhaps, than she deserved, but our community, which justly has the reputation of being peaceable and law-abiding, has secured far more than it deserved. it is time to pause aud cooly rellect. Can this blow, at law and order, be condoned in a civilized and enlightened community? Can parties take the law into their own hands in this way and Bocietv not silver thereby? If it can be done in a case of this kind, why not in different cases of other kinds? No, we must not lapse back into a state of savagry and barbarism ! and in order not to do o, the enlightened public sentiment of the community must take a bold stand and Hpeak out in no uncertain sound against offenses of this character.
